About the Position
The Director of Conservation is responsible for enhancing the protection and preservation of Colonial Williamsburg's cultural and historic assets by providing leadership and oversight of the Foundation's innovative conservation department. To accomplish this, the Director oversees departmental priorities and production, manages the operating budget, and ensures the quality of analysis, care, surveys, treatment, and documentation. Additionally, the Director represents the department and articulates conservation issues throughout the institution; supports educational and interpretive efforts in the Historic Area and museums; participates in activities associated with donor development, grant writing, and other fundraising events; and acts as a liaison with outside individuals and organizations on conservation matters as needed.
Main Duties:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Oversees the effective operation and leadership of the conservation department, including supervision of conservators and the preventive conservation group. Functions include hiring, training, goal setting, guidance on professional and technical concerns, performance appraisal, and execution of corrective actions when necessary in accordance with established Foundation policies.
* Facilitates productive working relationships within and outside the department.
* Works consistently to maintain the cutting-edge status of the department, its staff, and its methodologies.
* Establishes departmental procedures and goals in accordance with Foundation and divisional policies and mission statements; develops, reviews, and refines the long-range plan for the department.
* Works with direct reports to establish, monitor, and maintain professional standards of treatment documentation, written/digital and photographic.
* Prepares and manages the department operating budget and related budgets, providing status reports to the senior vice president.
* Approves expenditures and purchases in accordance with Foundation policies.
* Collaborates with the senior vice president and the Director of Museum Design and Production to provide budget information for exhibitions as requested.
* Works with Public Safety to ensure effective emergency plans are in place, emergency preparedness and response procedures are followed, and emergency supply depots are supplied and maintained.
* Ensures conservation staff collaboration with curators and registrars on collections management issues, including exhibition, storage, preventive conservation, evaluation of accessions, surveys, and loans.
* Supports and encourages conservation staff professional development.
* Reviews manuscripts prepared for publication and promotes study and research related to the conservation needs of Foundation collections.
* Leads conservation staff in implementing conservation training for Foundation staff in collections-related areas.
* Collaborates with the senior vice president on departmental fundraising and grant applications; participates in donor development and prepares status reports to donors and granting agencies.
* Develops the department's research and analytical capabilities in a practical, cost-efficient, and equitable manner.
* Oversees conservation equipment and facilities used by the department.
* Performs related work as directed.
Budgetary Responsibilities: Annual operating budget of approx. $2.8M
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises a team of professional conservation staff, including two (2) Conservators, five (5) Senior Conservators, two (2) Associate Conservators, and one (1) specialized conservation role supporting musical instruments.
Required Education and Experience:
* Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in conservation, history, art history, American studies, or a related field.
* Graduate-level conservation studies or equivalent technical education and/or professional experience.
* Ten (10) or more years of professional conservation experience.
* Six (6) or more years of management experience, including leading teams with varied skill sets and levels of expertise within a museum or related cultural institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Professional conservation experience with an emphasis on 16th- to 20th-century British, European, and/or American objects.

The Gamage Democracy Fellowship is a prestigious one-year, full-time, benefitted position at The Colonial Williamsburg (CW) Foundation, designed to honor Stewart Gamage's legacy and advance her vision of promoting democracy and civic engagement. The Fellow will develop international education programs in collaboration with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Presidential Precinct, and William & Mary. They will contribute to the realization of the "Destination Democracy" concept, promoting CW as an international hub for education and for the advocacy of democracy.
* CW will cover all housing expenses for the selected incumbent, including rent and utilities.
Essential Functions:
1. Develop and implement not for credit international democracy and civic engagement education programs for learned professionals who are in the space of law, technology, public policy in their respective countries by doing the following:
a. Researching best practices in democracy education and collaborating with experts from W&M and the Presidential Precinct to develop curriculum content.
b. Designing, implementing, and coordinating logistics for in person or virtual workshops, seminars, or lecture series that bring together young professionals and experts to discuss democratic principles and practices. The Fellow is expected to facilitate discussions and exercises during the same.
c. Collaborating with internal stakeholders to create educational materials and resources that showcase CW as a hub for democracy education.
d. Evaluating the program's effectiveness and making improvements for future iterations.
2. Engage in direct civic activism and create positive change through innovative initiatives including organizing events or conferences that attract international professionals to CW, fostering dialogue on contemporary democratic challenges and solutions.
3. Establish partnerships with international organizations and institutions to expand the reach and impact of CW's democracy-focused initiatives.
4. Represent the Gamage Democracy Fellowship in various forums and events, serving as an ambassador for the program's mission (i.e an annual international conference on democracy where they would network with other young professionals in the fields of civic engagement, law, public policy, and/or participate/moderate a panel discussion.)
5. Coordinate program development between the three partner institutions, ensuring alignment with their respective mission and goals.
6. Assist in budget planning for educational programs and events they develop through the following:
a. Collaborating with financial staff at Colonial Williamsburg, the Presidential Precinct, and William & Mary to allocate resources for joint initiatives.
b. Helping to identify potential funding sources or grants for program expansion.
c. Ensuring that proposed programs and activities align with available resources.

About the Position
Drives carriages in the Historic Area, taking visitors for scheduled rides. Drives carriages and wagons for special events and programs. Interprets driving, travel and transportation in 18th-century Virginia with emphasis on carriages and horses. Follows procedures for care of horses and carriages. Assists Livestock Husbanders in care and movement of sheep, cattle, poultry as assigned; other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
* Prepares horses for street work, including grooming, washing, checking hooves and condition of the shoes. Advises Head Coachman or Stable Operations Supervisor of any issues.

About the Position
An apprentice supports the Education and Preservation Mission of Historic Trades and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation by learning and demonstrating the hand skills required to manufacture traditional work of the colonial period. The Apprentice will research primary and secondary 18th-century sources and object-based study. The Arborist Trainee assist in the daily maintenance of Colonial Williamsburg trees and performs landscape tasks in accordance with department standards. About the Position
The Senior AV Technician manages the setup, operation, maintenance, and modification of sound, lighting, rigging, projection, and related technical systems for stage productions, films, meetings, and events at the Kimball Theatre. Responsibilities include recording, amplifying, mixing, and reproducing sound for live performances, film productions, and recordings to ensure high-quality presentations. The role also supports the Kimball Theatre Manager with day-to-day operations.
Main Duties:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Meets with clients and touring productions to provide necessary consultations to clarify needs and determine technical equipment, support personnel, and timetables necessary to stage the event in accordance with the Kimball Theatre master schedule.
* Operates and performs day-to-day equipment maintenance on all technical systems and house equipment including computerized lighting systems, sound systems, control devices, projection systems, mechanical rigging, and related controls used for film, video, and live performances.
* Designs and engineers all major system modifications including writing technical specifications for long-range system modifications and purchases, making recommendations for award of bids and new systems for facility improvement and economy.
* Schedules and arranges for supplemental equipment and contracted labor as approved by the Executive Director of Performing Arts & Signature Events.
* Participates in the preparation of the annual operating budget by specifying supplies and equipment to be purchased and estimating costs.
* Maintains all of the facilities of the Kimball Theatre, including coordinating and scheduling building maintenance and repair. Oversee the maintenance of all inventory related to staging and production.
* Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide seamless, quality customer service.
* Operates a 48-channel digital audio console, a 32-channel analog monitor console, and a theatrical lighting console.
This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
Required Education and Experience:
* High school diploma and four years of relevant experience OR A relevant bachelor's degree or an associate degree with two years of related experience.
* 2-3 years of experience directly related to the position that includes experience with:
* Theatrical and concert lighting systems (profile, Fresnel, par, etc.) and intelligent (color scroller, mirror head, strobe, moving heads, etc.) lighting fixtures.
* Modern stage operations conducted in public assembly facilities designed for multipurpose uses.
* Lighting, audio, and cinema equipment systems operation, repair, and maintenance to ensure they function properly within normal tolerances.
* Sound amplifying and related equipment.
* Theatrical staging including but not limited to experience with a hemp line rigging system, scenery, stage props, effects machinery, and production logistics.
* Public facilities operations and maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications:
* General knowledge of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the College of William and Mary, and the Williamsburg community.
* Technical factory training (Yamaha CA, Crown, ECT).
Key Skills / Competencies:
* Strong working knowledge of complex concert audio systems including best mixing practices on both digital and analog audio consoles, power amplifiers, digital signal processors (DSP), stage set-up, and microphone techniques for concerts and theatres.
* Proficiency with audio signal processors (gates, compressors, and multi-effects units.)
* Ability to program lighting consoles and fixtures using DMC protocol.
* Ability to set up a complete on-stage monitor (fold back) system including split outputs to the front-of-house console, outboard graphic equalizers, crossovers, amplifiers, and monitor speakers.
* Comprehensive understanding of theatre and cinema operations.
* Familiarity with system capabilities, limitations, safety protocol, maintenance, and occupational hazards.
* Knowledge of fire code precautions for event productions.
* Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) programs for facility setup.
* Demonstrated customer service skills.
* Excellent oral and written communication.
* Flexibility to work a seven-day operation with an irregular schedule.
