Columbia Association company history timeline

1966

Construction began in June 1966.

The Columbia Association, formerly The Columbia Park and Recreation Association, Inc., was formed in 1966, two years prior to Columbia’s inception to nurture Rouse’s vision and represent city residents.

1967

The dedication ceremony at Wilde Lake was held a year later, on June 21, 1967, marking the beginning of Columbia.

Columbia was founded in 1967 by James Rouse and his Howard Research and Development Company.

1968

Oakland Mills Community Association was incorporated in 1968; however, our history dates back to the 1700’s.

1969

The Other Barn, the Oakland Mills Community Center since 1969, and The Barn, the Columbia Youth & Teen Center (owned and operated by the Columbia Association), were once part of the Owings Dorsey Dairy Farm and were among the few buildings preserved when Columbia was built.

2004

In 2004, General Growth Properties purchased The Rouse Company in a deal valued at $12.6 billion.

In 2004, Howard County began a process to develop a master plan for Downtown Columbia.

2005

Undergraduate History Council The Undergraduate History Council (UHC) was founded in 2005 as a group of undergraduate representatives for history majors and concentrators.

2014

Beginning in 2014 with the adaptive re-use of the Frank Gehry-designed former headquarters of The Rouse Company as Whole Foods, the downtown is showing signs of meeting the goal of a vibrant city center.

2017

Columbia celebrated its 50th birthday in 2017.
