Columbia Missourian company history timeline

1908

The first issue of the Columbia Missourian was printed on the day that classes started, September 14, 1908.

1924

The Boone County History and Culture Center has been preserving and exhibiting plenty of past memorabilia since 1924.

1928

Built in 1928, the Tiger Hotel is a great representation of the early stages of Columbia.

1959

In 1959, construction began on a new headquarters for the Columbia Missourian.

1970

The institution was originally founded as a Christian Female College, but changed its name to Columbia College when it transitioned from a two-year women’s college to a four-year coeducational college in 1970.

1985

In 1985, the Missourian became the world's first daily newspaper to use a local-area network for production.

1992

In 1992, the Missourian became one of the world's first newspapers to offer content in a digital format as well as the traditional print format.

2005

Growth and Development On July 5, 2005, the City Council approved the largest voluntary annexation of land in city history: an 805-acre swath east of Highway 63 owned by developer Billy Sapp.

Several long-time city officials¿including the city manager¿had retired or announced retirement in mid-2005.

2014

2018

On July 1, 2018, Ruby Bailey became the Missourian's first female executive editor.
