Columbia Public Schools company history timeline

1851

Public higher education in the District is rooted in the school for “colored girls” that Myrtilla Miner founded in 1851 in Washington, D.C., which came to be called the Miner Normal School.

1960

School History By the late 1960's the city of Columbia was growing rapidly and the school age population was increasing annually.

1968

In 1968, the Columbia Board of Education purchased 42 acres of land located on the southern edge of the city limits to construct a new high school.

1973

The name "Rock Bridge" was chosen for the new high school which opened in September 1973 with an enrollment of 583 in grades 10 through 12.

The Conrad Stawski’s Humanities class of 1973 created the school crest, displaying the motto, "Omnes Vincent Ursi" or "Bruins Conquer All." With Wayne Walker as principal and Robert Watkins as assistant, there was a staff of 29 full-time and 10 part time teachers and a student enrollment of 580.

1977

In 1977, under President Carter’s leadership, UDC began consolidating its academic programs.

1978

With the addition of the west wing in 1978, another 20 classrooms were added.

1979

The entire project, funded and constructed by parents, students and private community sponsors, opened in the fall of 1979.
