In November 1813, the college agreed to incorporate its medical school with The College of Physicians and Surgeons, a new school created by the Regents of New York, forming Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
The Columbia School of Law was founded in 1858.
Its Teachers College (1887), with the city for a laboratory, is one of the best known in the nation, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1767), together with the Presbyterian Hospital and allied institutions, forms the nucleus of one of the country’s renowned medical centres.

When Seth Low became Columbia's president in 1890, he vigorously promoted the university ideal for the College, placing the fragmented federation of autonomous and competing schools under a central administration that stressed cooperation and shared resources.
By 1892, The School of Mines, the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the School of Nursing, the School of Library Service, the School of Architecture, and the law school were all established.
In 1896, university president Seth Low moved the campus from 49th Street to its present location, a more spacious campus in the developing neighborhood of Morningside Heights.

In addition to the Nobel Prize, Varmus was awarded the National Medal of Science (2001) for his work on oncogenes and for his work to revitalize scientific research in the United States.
