Position Summary
The Mechanic A performs all phases of repair and maintenance and demonstrates the required knowledge of safe use of equipment and tools and accurately read blueprints, schematics, and diagrams. In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, may be required to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis and work overtime. Provide basic knowledge in all areas and skills with a demonstrated proficiency in Preventive Maintenance and at least two skills (electrical/plumbing/carpentry).
Responsibilities
* Duties include troubleshoot, repair, replace circuits using wire, raceway or conduit, junction boxes, receptacles, switches, motors and lighting, incandescent or fluorescent fixtures, ballasts, switches, sockets, and receptacles. Install cables, conduits and boxes. Test equipment and document tests.
* Install, repair, and replace fixtures including faucets, drains, flushometers and valves.
* Maintain, repair, replace domestic water piping. Measure, cut thread and fit pipe and tubing in the field. Braze/solder as needed. Repair/replace hot water or steam radiators, valves, thermostats, and pressure traps. Clear waste line stoppages using hand or power equipment.
* Install small appliances, pumps, check valves and all plumbing materials associated with above.
* Maintain grease traps.
* Repair/maintain/install interior doors, related hardware, and additional items for building or room security. Install bathroom equipment, such as vanity, medicine cabinet, mirrors, and dispensers.
* Repair/replacement of cabinets, furniture, and other wooden and hardware structure shelving. Replace/install floor and ceiling tiles. Work with sheetrock and/or plaster walls.
* Patch, plaster, speckle, tape and paint walls.
* Flash and repair sidewalks to cure unsafe conditions. Mix and apply paint, varnish, stain, lacquer, or enamel on smooth interior and exterior surface fixtures, ensuring all areas (floors, furniture, etc.) are protected.
* Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of daily assignments and follow the work order process. Recommend products and equipment to be on assigned jobs as requested by a supervisor.
* Maintain records to ensure routine compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.
* Assist in evaluating new equipment for purchase.
* Calculate the quantity of material needed and requisition supplies.
Minimum Qualifications
* High school diploma, GED or equivalent required.
* Satisfactory passing of applicable tests.
* Three years of experience in trades and/or technical discipline or satisfactory completion of an approved training program or successful completion of a Mechanic Training Program.
* Must have all applicable licenses and permits.
* Ability to read and interpret documents, follow written, oral, diagrammatical or scheduled forms; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instruction.
* Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and move heavier objects with assisted devices.
* Work near or with moving mechanical parts, chemical, and electrical equipment required.
Preferred Qualifications
* Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
* Strong interpersonal communication skills.
* Strong collaborative skills.
Other Requirements
* Employees hired after March 26, 1999, will be subject to a four-year wage progression in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
* Required to be Tuberculosis (TB) negative, submit to periodic TB testing, and a chest x-ray if a positive TB test is read.

Job Summary:
The Department of Facilities Management and Development at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R).
The types of equipment Service & Repair Mechanics (HVAC-R) work with include ammonia brine, freon, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, methyl chloride and lithium bromide units, absorption cold generators, all types of coolers, refrigerators and freezers, air-conditioning units and systems, humidifiers, compressors, ventilators, cooling towers, and other related equipment.
Illustrative Duties
Perform required periodic maintenance and emergency repairs on refrigeration and air conditioning.
Inspect, test, diagnose trouble, and dismantle manufacturing systems and components.
Overhaul compressors, pumps, and electric motors, replacing parts as necessary.
Overhaul and replace control devices, calibrate and recalibrate them as necessary.
Rewire electrical systems of components as necessary.
Perform seasonal start-up and shut-down operations on air-conditioning units and systems to ensure efficient operation and to prevent freeze-ups.
Locate and seal leaks in both gas and brine units, removes air from lines, and replaces with proper refrigerant.
Install new equipment both as replacement units and new installations.
Study blueprints and schematic drawings to identify the location, size, and type of components.
Lay out reference points for the installation of components using structural measuring tools.
Assemble components of a system for installation following written and schematic instructions, as necessary.
Cut threads and connect or weld tubing to inlets and outlets of components.
Install control mechanism with wrenches and acetylene torches.
Test lines, connections, and components for leaks with a leak detector which indicates the presence of refrigerant.
May install electric wiring to connect components to a power source, if necessary.
Record temperature and pressure readings from gauges and temperature potentiometer and compares readings with manufacturer's expectations.
Adjust controls to bring readings within specifications as required.
As assigned, supervises and trains Service & Repair Assistants (HVAC-R), Plant Utilities Assistants, and other trades positions in the repair and maintenance of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment.
Assigns work to staff providing oral and written instructions and diagrams as necessary.
Demonstrates proper methods and procedures for performing work.
Observes and inspects work in progress and at its completion to insure work is properly done.
Performs journey level work as required.
As required, operates a motor vehicle to transport material, equipment and personnel to job sites around a State facility.
Required Qualifications:
Successful completion of a NYS 2-year Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R) Traineeship or NYS two-year refrigeration repair and maintenance training program;
OR successful completion of any equivalent refrigeration two-year training or apprenticeship program;*
OR four (4) years of full-time experience in the mechanical or electrical trades under a skilled journey-level mechanic or electrician which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program, one (1) year of which must include both training and work in the operation and maintenance of commercial type refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment;
Apprenticeship training in the mechanical or electrical trades or training gained by completion of technical courses in the mechanical or electrical trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
(* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* Performs seasonal start-up and shut-down operations on air-conditioning units and systems to ensure efficient operation and to prevent freeze-ups.
* Locates and seals leaks in both gas and brine units, removes air from lines and replaces with proper refrigerant.
Installs new equipment both as replacement units and new installations.
* Studies blueprints and schematic drawings to identify the location, size and type of components.
* Lays out reference points for the installation of components using structural measuring tools.
* As necessary assembles components of system for installation following written and schematic instructions.
* Mounts compressors, condensers and other components in specified locations.
* Cuts, threads and connects or welds tubing to inlets and outlets of components.
* Installs control mechanisms with wrenches and acetylene torches.
* Tests lines, connections and components for leaks with leak detector which indicates the presence of refrigerant.
* May install electric wiring to connect components to power source.
* Records temperature and pressure readings from gauges and temperature potentiometer and compares readings with manufacturer's specifications.
* Adjusts controls to bring readings within specifications as required.
As assigned, supervises and trains Service & Repair Assistants (HVAC-R), Plant Utilities Assistants, and other trades positions in the repair and maintenance of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment.
* Assigns work to staff providing oral and written instructions and diagrams as necessary.
* Demonstrates proper methods and procedures for performing work.
* Observes and inspects work in progress and at its completion to insure work is properly done.
* Performs journey level work as required.
As required, operates a motor vehicle to transport material, equipment and personnel to job sites around campus.

Requirements:
Successful completion of a NYS two-year Service & Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R) Traineeship or NYS two-year refrigeration repair and maintenance training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent refrigeration two-year training or apprenticeship program;* OR four (4) years of full-time experience in the mechanical or electrical trades under a skilled journey-level mechanic or electrician which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program, one (1) year of which must include both training and work in the operation and maintenance of commercial type refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment. Apprenticeship training in the mechanical or electrical trades or training gained by completion of technical courses in the mechanical or electrical trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of "C" or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

This is a 12-month position that is part of the Teamster bargaining group.
Qualifications:
The minimum requirements for a drivers license is to posses a valid NJ Class B commercial driver license with air brake endorsement, passengers endorsement with a mechanics restriction. If the applicant is under twenty-one (21) years of age, six (6) months after the employee's twenty-first birthday, the employee must have obtained a valid NJ Class B CDL with air brake endorsement, passengers endorsement with a mechanics restriction or resign from the position for failing to meet the qualifications.
One (1) year experience in the automotive field or attended a technical automotive school.
Must be able to work with oil, grease, fuel, soaps, cleaners and other vehicle fluids on a daily basis.
Must be able to work outside in the weather to maintain, repair and fuel district vehicles.
Must be able to sit, stand, bend and perform repetitive motions for long periods of time to repair, fuel and clean vehicles. Must have the ability to climb in and out of buses.
Must be able to lift and carry vehicle components of seventy-five (75) pounds 15% of the time.
