Columbus Academy company history timeline

1911

September 25, 1911 – With a tuition of $225-$250 per student, Academy opened its doors with Headmaster Frank P.R. Van Syckel, two teachers and 18 students, becoming one of just a handful of country day schools in the United States.

1913

Summer 1913 – Dining hall/multipurpose room (on the right in the above photo of the early campus) was built for $3800.

1913 – The family of BenjaminW. Fullington ’16 was the first to receive financial assistance.

1916

Spring 1916 – Special year-end School and Field issue named the Caravel by editor Paul Schoedinger ’16 along with the motto “In Quest of the Best.”

1917

1917 – First hard-bound edition of the Caravel published.

1920

1920 – First presentation of the Cornell Cup for excellence inmathematics; and, seeing a need formore space, school directors authorized construction of a large study hall.

1923

December 18, 1923 – Columbus Academy became a not-for-profit corporation.

1925

1925 – Financial aid endowments created scholarships.

1941

July 1941 – Charles Hodges Jones succeeded Van Syckel as the school’s Headmaster.

2021

She said the squad was started in 2021, when advisers and teachers started to realize how much the pandemic was affecting the GPA and mental health of students.
