Columbus College of Art & Design company history timeline

1879

The first day of classes was January 6, 1879, on the top floor of the Sessions Building at Long and High.

In 1879, the Columbus Art School, the predecessor of the Columbus College of Art & Design, opened in Columbus, Ohio.

CCAD was founded in 1879 as the Columbus Art School.

1885

1885 The first class of students graduated from CCAD.

1923

In 1923, the school, which had been run by the Columbus Art Association but funded by the gallery, merged into one board.

1929

In 1929, Ralph Beaton, a trustee of the gallery, donated $30,000 to build the first new building for the Columbus Art School.

1930

Beaton Hall was completed and held its first classes in 1930.

1944

By 1944–45, the day school was discontinued because of World War II, but the evening school had been expanded.

1948

Joseph Canzani started as a teacher at the school in 1948.

1958

1959

In 1959, Canzani changed the name from the Columbus Art School to the Columbus College of Art & Design.

1969

In 1969, CCAD received authorization by the Ohio Board of Regents to grant the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

1970

1970 The first class of CCAD students with Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees graduated.

1976

In 1976, CCAD was granted accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art.

1979

1979 Joseph Canzani became the college’s first President.

1982

Canzani requested for CCAD to become independent of the CMA and by 1982, the separation was complete.

1985

The Schottenstein Residence Hall was completed in 1985 as the first campus dorm.

1991

The Joseph V. Canzani Center, the last new building to be built during his presidency, was completed in 1991.

1993

1993 The Joseph V. Canzani Center was built, giving CCAD our first dedicated gallery and auditorium.

2001

2001 On June 23, 2001, CCAD made a mark on the city skyline with our giant Art Sculpture.

On June 23, 2001, the 100-foot-high, 101-foot-wide, 24,000-pound ART sign was erected, spanning Gay Street on campus.

2005

The Loann Crane Center for Design was built in 2005, replacing the old student center, and its adjacent quad replaced a parking lot.

2010

2010 CCAD launched its first graduate program, the Master of Fine Arts degree.

2012

The first MFA class graduated in 2012.

2013

2013 State-of-the-art fabrication space, called the Tad Jeffrey FabLab, was built, housing 3D printers, laser cutters and machining equipment.

2014

The school also debuted a new curricular model that splits the majors into two schools, the School of Design Arts and the School for Studio Arts. It's finalized form launched in the Fall of 2014.

2015

In December 2015, CCAD's board of trustees named Doctor Melanie Corn as the school's new president.

2016

2016 Doctor Melanie Corn was named first female President of CCAD.

2018

2018 CCAD opens the state-of-the-art Cloyd Family Animation Center.

2019

2019 CCAD celebrates its 140th anniversary with a year of special programming, stories, and events, including a compilation of CCAD Found Footage taken over the decades from the college’s video archive.
