The City of Commerce began as the community of Harmony Grove which was founded in 1818.
Most notably, the Harmony Grove Female Academy was the first school for girls in the state and was established in 1824.
Early on, the city flourished as a cotton market and eventually became synonymous with textiles when local businessmen launched Harmony Grove Mills in 1893.
The Department of Commerce was originally created as the US Department of Commerce and Labor on February 14, 1903.
It was subsequently renamed the Department of Commerce on March 4, 1913, as the bureaus and agencies specializing in labor were transferred to the new Department of Labor.
In 1969, CompuServe was the first major e-commerce company to be formed in the United States.
