Essential Functions (Job Duties)
JOB PURPOSE
Assist the Development Communications team with tasks to support the creation of a variety of informative and inspiring messages that encourage philanthropic support to promote the mission, priorities and values of Wayne State University. Provide organizational and administrative support that helps the team strengthen communications within the division, across campus and in the community to encourage long-term involvement with Wayne State from diverse audiences. This position reports to the Associate Director, Content Development.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assist the development communications team with administration and organizational efforts as the team prepares a variety of projects for university-wide fundraising initiatives such as major donor proposals, case statements, Web-based and print materials, and more. This includes searching for suitable photographs, ensuring the graphic designer has all necessary materials, preparing projects for printing, and processing quotes and invoices.
Help manage the workflow of the development communications team by maintaining detailed project tracking documents to ensure the required deadlines are met.
Monitor and maintain database of faculty, staff and general Wayne State stories from external news sources to serve as a resource for stories and fundraising materials. Help ensure broad representation of all schools, colleges and units in fundraising materials.
Identify and contact students who may potentially be featured in a story or video. Maintain student questionnaire profile folder and database.
Assist in managing the division's social media output by creating and posting original content.
Assist with general office tasks, including filing, consolidating digital folders, etc.
Help with light writing projects such as rewriting direct mail appeals, etc.
Assist with implementing communication plans for a comprehensive fundraising campaign.
Assist the Director with setting and achieving annual goals and objectives.
Adhere to confidentiality and data usage policy for the division.
Perform related work as assigned.
Unique Duties
Qualifications
Education Bachelor's degree
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in marketing, journalism or related field.
Reasonable knowledge and understanding of university policies and procedures.
Experience Entry level (less that a year of job-related experience)
Minimum 1-2 years working in an office environment. Knowledge of general office work is required.
Knowledge of fundraising practices, preferred. Higher education experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS: Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and professionally both orally and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills are a must. Ability to work successfully with persons from diverse backgrounds.
EDITING and PROOFREADING SKILLS: Ability to accurately edit and proofread a variety of materials under tight deadlines.
PLANNING AND ORGANIZATION: Ability to manage several projects simultaneously, prioritize and plan work activities while meeting respective deadlines. Strong organizational and time-management skills required. Demonstrated ability to manage and execute multiple creative projects in various media, often at the same time.
ANALYTICAL AND PRESENTATION SKILLS: Ability to evaluate, interpret, and present complex information effectively in professionally prepared documents or presentations. Must possess a demonstrated attention to detail in order to achieve a high degree of accuracy.
TECHNICAL SKILLS: Proficient in the use of complex administrative systems software, preferrably in the higher education environment. Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel and Teams.
LEARNING AGILITY: Independent and innovative self-starter who displays an ability to learn quickly and easily adapts to changing situations. Experience researching topics to gain knowledge and understanding when information gaps exist.
