Community Action Agency company history timeline

1965

In 1965 Community Action Programs (CAPs) were created across the nation.

SEVCA: Southeastern Vermont Community Action opened its doors in 1965 in Bellows Falls, VT to serve the low-income population of Windham and Windsor Counties.

1968

King’s last speech, 4 days before his assassination in 1968, was a challenge to the nation, and a call to action against the violence of poverty, announcing his “Poor People’s Campaign” and upcoming march on Washington.

1969

By 1969, the OEO had started several programs recognizable today, including Head Start, Legal Services, VISTA, Foster Grandparents, Economic Development, Neighborhood Centers, Summer Youth Programs, and Congregate Meal Sites.

1973

Many working in the poverty field saw the election of Jimmy Carter as an opportunity to return to the strides made through 1973 that had actually reduced poverty.

1980

Program continues through the summer of 1980 and expands to 8 feeding sites.

2015

In 2015, for our 50th Anniversary, SEVCA unearthed a great deal of information on the organization's history.
