In March, 1964, the Board of Trustees of State Colleges appointed Doctor William F. Flanagan as the first president of Rhode Island Junior College.
Royal Webster Knight, great grandson of Robert Knight of the famous B. B. & R. Knight Company and owner of the Pontiac Mill, gave eighty acres of his property in the Natick section of Warwick to the State of Rhode Island for a junior college campus in October 1964.
When the school opened in 1964, it was housed in makeshift quarters at 199 Promenade Street in the old Brown & Sharpe complex in Providence.
In 1965, a portion of the nearby former Brown & Sharpe manufacturing facility was converted into classroom space and served as the college's primary facility until 1972. It was founded as Rhode Island Junior College, "RIJC", in 1964 with 325 students studying at the Henry Barnard School in Providence, Rhode Island.
The college megastructutre Ground breaking for the building of the main building on the Knight campus began in 1969.
In November of 1970, Rhode Island voters approved a $12,250,000 bond issue for construction of the Flanagan Campus and preliminary planning for a Newport-Mount Hope Campus.
By the time the new campus was opened in Warwick in September 1972, the college enrollment was over 3,000.
Construction of the Flanagan Campus started in the summer of 1974.
The 300-acre campus, located on Louisquisset Pike at Route 146 in Lincoln, opened in September of 1976, with an enrollment of 1,700 students.
A multi-purpose school In 1978, Edward J. Liston became the second president of Rhode Island Junior College and moved into the home on the former Knight Estate.
The Margaret M. Jacoby Observatory, located on the Knight Campus grounds, was opened in 1978.
On June 26, 1980, the Rhode Island Board of Regents for Education approved a change in the name of the College from Rhode Island Junior College to Community College of Rhode Island to reflect the true mission of the institution.
The school was renamed the Community College of Rhode Island in June 1980.
The Providence Campus opened in September of 1990.
In the spring of 1990, the Community College of Rhode Island acquired the Opportunities Industrialization Center building located at One Hilton Street in South Providence.
