James E. Shmerling was named President and Chief Executive Officer at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center on October 1, 2015. For over three decades, Dr. Shmerling has served in management roles in children’s hospitals and is nationally recognized as a leader in issues concerning children’s health and wellness. Prior to joining Connecticut Children’s, Dr. Shmerling spent the last eight years as the Chief Executive Officer of Children’s Hospital Colorado, one of the top ranked children’s hospitals in the nation. Before that, he was the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt from 2002 to 2007. He was the Senior Vice President of Methodist Healthcare and President of Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center from 1995 to 2002, and was Le Bonheur’s Chief Operating Officer from 1991 to 1995. He served as the Associate Director of Hospitals at Indiana University Hospitals and Administrator of the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children from 1987 to 1991. Dr. Shmerling’s career in children’s hospitals began in the Children’s Hospital of Alabama where he progressed in administrative responsibilities from 1979 to1987, the last of which was as its Associate Administrator. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Education from the University of Tennessee in 1976. In 1980, he was awarded a Master of Science Degree in Hospital and Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He earned a Master of Business Administration from Samford University in 1984 and his Doctorate of Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1999. Dr. Shmerling is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives (ACHE). He is an adjunct faculty member in the Hospital Administration programs, University of Alabama at Birmingham. Additionally, Dr. Shmerling is active in several national healthcare organizations.

Fernando Sañudo joined the VCC team in 1988 as a Health Educator, and in his nearly thirty years with the organization, he’s held additional positions as Project Coordinator, Health Program Center Director, and Clinic Administrator. His wide range of expertise with the clinic includes program research, design, and evaluation, as well as extensive experience in community outreach and education. He has been an Independent Consultant for both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as a professional grant reviewer and Project Concern International in the area of program design and evaluation. Mr. Sañudo is also adjunct faculty at the University of San Diego (USD) and teaches Design and Evaluation for the Master's Program in Nonprofit Administration and Leadership. Mr. Sañudo has co-authored several chapters in books and professional journals regarding HIV-prevention and in 2008, he was named the “Health Champion of the Year” for Molina. As CEO for VCC, Mr. Sañudo leads an executive team of nine members, in addition to a staff of over 500 employees, in addition to over 100 volunteers. Working with the Board of Directors, Mr. Sañudo provides oversight to all aspects of VCC’s operations and liaisons with the local and regional government on important health care advocacy issues. He’s been inspired by watching VCC grow over the course of his three decades with the organization and seeing the impact that a functional community clinic model can have on overall community health.

Kimberly Paul is a Chief Administrative Officer at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and Chief Executive Officer at Wright State Physicians and is based in Fairborn, Ohio. She has worked as Chief Operating Officer at Wright State Physicians; Project Manager, Planning and Business Development at Nationwide Children s Hospital; and Director of Operations, Center for Child and Family Advocacy at Nationwide Children s Hospital. Kimberly attended Ohio University between 1999 and 2000 and Ohio University between 1995 and 1999.

I currently serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Sacramento Native American Health Center, Inc.(SNAHC), an AAAHC accredited, PCMH certified, non-profit urban Indian health center. The health center plays a major role as part of the heath care “safety net” in the Sacramento area. We are rooted in and responsive to our local community, we share a common sense of mission and purpose, and we have proved resilient in the face of challenges and change. Beyond providing health care, our goal is to contribute to the development and empowerment of all members of the Sacramento community.
