Community High School District 94 history

The opening date of the new high school was September 23, 1926.

The 21st annual commencement (the first at the new high school) was held on June 11, 1927.

In 1954, Community High School experienced its first addition to the building.

On September 19, 1955, Providence High School officially opened its doors to 81 eager female students.

The Southfield area was developed as single family homes in about 1957.

On June 15, 1959, 68 young women took part in the school's first annual commencement, held at the Starlight Bowl.

On the first day of school that fall, September 3, 1974, young men began taking classes at Providence High School.

In 1978 additions were added to the north and south ends of the building providing a swimming pool, fieldhouse, greenhouses, library, commons, and administrative offices.

In 1992, the school established the Board of Regents, an advisory board comprised of interested and influential community members.

In January of 1998, the Providence High School community celebrated the school's recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the United States Department of Education.

The year 2000 found Providence High School continuing to grow and prosper.

In 2008 the community of South Los Angeles was notified that the District acquired the land-13.4 acres and intended to build a new high school that woiuld have 75 new classrooms to relieve Santee Education Complex.

Doctor Maya Angelou Community High School, established in 2011, is located in Los Angeles and is the home of the Wolfpack.

In the summer of 2014 the Los Angeles Unified School District made a change to the schools on our campus and decided to combine the sister schools-the Social Justice Schools: Fine
