What originated in 1902 as a single hospital serving its neighbors has today grown into an expansive healthcare system that touches the lives of individuals throughout Ventura County, California and beyond.
The history of hospital service in Hicksville goes back to 1917, when Addie Amaden graduated from University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a nursing degree.
In 1950, after years of meetings, discussions, and negotiations, the Defiance County townships of Mark, Milford, and Hicksville came together to form the Joint Township Hospital District.
The first Mark, Milford, Hicksville joint township hospital opened in 1953, and since, Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) has been dedicated to improving the health of residents in our service area.
Founded in 1954, VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) is a nonprofit health care facility operated by a voluntary, elected Board of Directors.
Community Memorial Hospital opened on July 27, 1958, as a 76-bed regional hospital.
The current 242-bed hospital was built in 1962.
Joseph and Lynn Bova, parents of CMH’s first quintuplets born in 2001, represented the families of children cared for in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Community Memorial Health System, established in 2005 when Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura merged with Ojai Valley Community Hospital, is comprised of these two hospitals along with family-practice health centers serving various communities within Ventura County.
Our most recent major addition was the construction of a new hospital facility in 2006 which included a new inpatient wing, emergency department, obstetrics department, surgery suites, café, and meeting rooms.
In 2008, CMH celebrated 50 years of service to our community.
In 2013, a $28 million dollar construction project was completed that basically created a new hospital from top to bottom.
On July 1, 2014, CMH ushered in a new day in health care with our affiliation with VCU Health System.
The six-story, 325,000-square-foot hospital will be built next to the current hospital at 147 N. Brent St, and is scheduled to open in 2015.
In 2019, an Orthopedic specialist clinic was developed within the hospital.
