The history of hospital service in Hicksville goes back to 1917, when Addie Amaden graduated from University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a nursing degree.
A certified critical access hospital, HSHS St Clare Memorial Hospital has been a part of Oconto Falls history since 1921.
In 1950, after years of meetings, discussions, and negotiations, the Defiance County townships of Mark, Milford, and Hicksville came together to form the Joint Township Hospital District.
Community Memorial Hospital and Redfield Clinic was built in 1950 as a 40-bed short term general hospital.
It opened on January 1, 1951.
The first Mark, Milford, Hicksville joint township hospital opened in 1953, and since, Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) has been dedicated to improving the health of residents in our service area.
In 1954, the hospital was named Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) in honor of military veterans and moved to the former City Hall which was remodeled to accommodate a larger facility.
Founded in 1954, VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) is a nonprofit health care facility operated by a voluntary, elected Board of Directors.
Community Memorial Hospital opened on July 27, 1958, as a 76-bed regional hospital.
A large addition was built in 1966 due to over-crowding, and it consisted of three stories with patient rooms, x-ray, laundry, and office space.
Considerable remodeling was done during this time (1968) to meet the needs of a growing community.
In 1972, the current facility at 855 S. Main Street opened its doors.
The clinic was purchased by the hospital and city in June of 1993.
In 2003, a $9 million dollar expansion and renovation of the facility was completed to include new Emergency, Intensive Care Unit, Imaging and Laboratory departments.
Community Memorial Health System, established in 2005 when Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura merged with Ojai Valley Community Hospital, is comprised of these two hospitals along with family-practice health centers serving various communities within Ventura County.
Our most recent major addition was the construction of a new hospital facility in 2006 which included a new inpatient wing, emergency department, obstetrics department, surgery suites, café, and meeting rooms.
In 2008, CMH celebrated 50 years of service to our community.
In the fall of 2009, the Community Memorial Hospital and Redfield Clinic and Clinic Foundation launched the "Our Commitment to a Healthy Future" campaign to raise funds to purchase various items for the $6.2 million expansion and renovation project that began at the hospital in spring 2009.
In 2013, a $28 million dollar construction project was completed that basically created a new hospital from top to bottom.
On July 1, 2014, CMH ushered in a new day in health care with our affiliation with VCU Health System.
1, 2014, Community Memorial Hospital joined Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) and became HSHS St Clare Memorial Hospital.
In 2019, an Orthopedic specialist clinic was developed within the hospital.
