Community of Hope company history timeline

1980

Hope Communities was founded in 1980 by a group of concerned citizens, troubled by the growing number of their friends and neighbors who were unable to advance economically due to, among other barriers, a lack of safe, affordable housing.

1995

In 1995, various staff members from St Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston came together to create the Community of Hope logo in order to publish the program’s first informational brochure.

1996

In June 1996, Pastor Dale was officially appointed, and his family packed their belongings to make the trek to Palm Beach County.

1997

On November 2, 1997, Community of Hope held its first service in the Royal Palm Beach High School auditorium.

The congregation continued to grow, and in 1997 Pastor Peterson left to start a new church in Georgia.

Community of Hope was officially launched on Easter Sunday, 1997.

1998

When Pastor Doug Adams came to Community of Hope in 1998, the church was looking for a permanent location.

2003

The survey was distributed and completed by students and parents in 10 public schools in Garner, NC in the spring of 2003.

In 2003, the “School Success Profile” was created by the Jordan Institute of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to collect data from students and parents in the school setting to identify areas of high risk for families and children.

2004

The grant writing team was notified in Summer of 2004 that it would be awarded a $1.4 million dollar grant.

2005

Community of Hope Ministries hosted its first cohort of students for its after school program in 2005 and was originally funded for four years by the 21st Century Community Learning Partners grant.

Since 2005, one program has exploded into nine different ministries, and COHM is now recognized in the corporate, civic, and faith community as a vibrant relief/development agency in the greater Garner area.

2017

In May 2017, our church voted to merge our church with the former Good Shepherd United Methodist Church on Military Trail in West Palm Beach.

2018

Pastor Doug retired in 2018, and Pastor John Foss was called to serve at Hope.

Community of Hope distributed over 176,000 meals to food insecure families in Southern Wake County in 2018.
