1977

1977 - An Alumni Trustee position is created, and a first member is named to a two-year term.

1978

1978 - Trustees authorize the first joint doctoral program between a CSUC campus and a private university, a Ph.D. in education at San Diego State University and Claremont Graduate School.

1982

1982 - The State University and Colleges system is designated "The California State University" (CSU).

The San Bernardino campus welcomed its second president, Anthony H. Evans, in 1982.

1983

1983 - A Faculty Trustee position is created, and the first member is named to a two-year term.

1984

1984 - Incoming freshmen and transfer students are now required by the CSU Board of Trustees to meet basic admissions requirements of college preparatory English (four years) and math (two years).

CSUSB earned its university status in 1984, officially becoming California State University, San Bernardino.

1986

Two years later in 1986, the university opened a second campus, the Coachella Valley Center, on land leased from the College of the Desert in Palm Desert.

1988

1988-89 - The 20th campus is created at San Marcos, and a founding president is named.

1993

Coyote Radio, the award-winning internet radio station for CSUSB, was introduced in 1993.

1995

1995 - California State University, Monterey Bay, a redevelopment of former military base Fort Ord, admits its first students.

1997

In 1997, Albert K. Karnig took the reins as the university’s third president.

2000

2000 - A second Student Trustee position is created.

2000 - Trustees approve aligning course requirements with the University of California so students can qualify for admission to either by taking the same set of courses.

2001

In the summer of 2001, the university began offering a year-round schedule of classes at the same cost as school-year classes.

2002

The first building on the Coachella Valley campus opened in 2002, and the campus officially changed its name to the Palm Desert Campus of California State University, San Bernardino.

2003

2003 - California State University Channel Islands begins accepting freshmen at the new campus.

CSUSB also developed the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Renaissance Scholars Program in 2003 to help foster youth from their freshmen to senior years, offering admissions assistance, financial guidance and academic advising.

2005

2005 - California State University, Hayward is renamed California State University, East Bay.

2010

2010 - The California State University celebrates its 50th anniversary.

2011

In fact, by 2011, the university's first-to-second year student retention rates reached record levels, as nearly 90 percent of all CSUSB first-time freshmen returned to the university — a level that was, at the time, among the three best in the 23-campus California State University system.

2012

Upon his arrival in August 2012, the university’s endowment stood at roughly $19 million.

In 2012, CSUSB was one of only four United States institutions and 18 in the world designated as Most Innovative Business Colleges by European CEO Magazine.

2013

Morales was officially invested on June 14, 2013.

2013 - The Cal State Concurrent Enrollment Program debuts.

In 2013, CSUSB’s satellite Palm Desert Campus welcomed its first freshman class.

2014

2014 - The CSU STEM VISTA Program launches to increase the number of students, especially from underrepresented communities, graduating with STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degrees.

2014 - The California State University surpasses 3 million living alumni, marking the milestone with the “Class of 3 Million" celebration.

In 2014, CSUSB signed a historic agreement that guarantees admission to the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus for qualifying high school students from three Coachella Valley school districts.

2015

The initiative received the maximum ($5 million) award in 2015, and the Growing Inland Achievement initiative was born, with a goal to create a coordinated cradle to a career pathway, linking education and business throughout the two counties for the first time ever.

The Palm Desert Campus also dramatically increased the size of its campus in early 2015, adding 113 acres to its original 53.

2016

The university also saw a noticeable increase in enrollment of African-American students in 2016, for both freshmen and transfer.

2017

The campus introduced its cutting-edge Neurofeedback Center in 2017.

2018

2018 - For the first time in the CS​U's history, a majority of the campus presidents are female, with 12 of the 23 campuses being led by women.

The 12 women presidents of the CSU in 2018.​

By the winter of 2018, the endowment had grown to $40+ million.

2019

Just 20 months later, the campaign had raised 93 percent of its goal ($46.5 M). By the campaign’s conclusion in 2019, it had reached a total of $54 million raised, exceeding its goal.

In fall 2019, the Center for Global Innovation, the Platinum LEED-certified new home of our College of Extended & Global Education and hub for the university’s global activities, opened.

2020

2020 - Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the university successfully transitioned all 23 campuses to virtual instruction for the health and safety of its faculty, staff and students.

Fall 2020 also marked the transformation of CSUSB from a quarter to a semester campus.
