Led by a Quaker heritage since the 19th century, Guilford College has provided a distinct educational environment that encourages individuals to think independently and make a positive difference in the world. The school offers majors in: Accounting, Computing and Information Technology, Forensic Biology, Peace and Conflict Studies, Pre-Veterinary Medicine, and more. It also allows qualifying students to take courses at other approved campuses, and career preparatory experiences are available through internship programs. In addition, there is an international study program where students can spend a semester or year traveling abroad for academic credit. The campus itself has an impressive athletic facility, library, and observatory. There is ample space for students to find something in which they are interested, like club sports, music festivals, open mic nights and poetry forums, quiet coffee shops for studying, volunteer opportunities, and a host of others. Those who are interested in applying to the college should know that the school places emphasis on coursework, grades, and standardized test scores (or an academic portfolio with writing samples in lieu of ACT or SAT results). Other factors considered for admissions include extracurricular activities and recommendation letters. Students who submit an academic portfolio are required to complete a personal interview as well. There is an application fee to apply, and the college accepts financial aid from a variety of sources to help those who are eligible to bring down the cost of tuition.

A historically black women's college, Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, North Carolina offers rigorous academics and many opportunities for women to become empowered leaders.
