A small, private institution, Prescott College provides highly individualized and innovative educational programs featuring alternative learning methods. As some of its majors indicate, Prescott is also a great place for environmentalists and those with a love for the outdoors. Prescott awards bachelor's degrees and several master's degrees. However, the school's approach to this degree is different from most. Prescott's popular majors include: *Environmental Studies *Ecology *Adventure Education *Arts and Letters *Creative Writing However, all students are required to incorporate multiple disciplines of their choice in the arts, sciences, and other subjects. Students also learn by alternative methods, such as discussion, group projects, and even by co-teaching classes in which they're enrolled. Grades are also quite different. Students begin each course by writing up a contract outlining what they would like to learn and accomplish in the course of the class. Then, rather than receiving letter or number grades, students get narrative evaluations in which the professor discusses how well they met their goals. The outdoors is a big part of the Prescott experience. During the first weeks of school, students undertake a wilderness adventure in the surrounding mountains. Rock-climbing and other outdoor activities are also a regular part of some classes as well as college life. Admissions requirements include a personal essay, transcripts and SAT or ACT scores, when they are able. In addition to academic performance Prescott seeks students who are able to work and think independently. Loans, grants, scholarships and work-study are awarded to eligible students to help with tuition costs. Financial aid eligibility is determined by several factors including financial need and academic performance. Based on these factors, Prescott will determine which types of aid may be awarded.
