Fallbrook Technologies (FT) hopes to ride the green technology wave all the way to the bank. Using its NuVinci Technology, the start-up company has developed a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that it calls continuously variable planetary technology or CVP. Rotating spheres replace traditional gears for smoother acceleration and improved engine efficiency. FT's Hodyon subsidiary (acquired in 2011) makes energy efficient products and systems, including auxiliary power unit (APU) products. Hodyon aims to use FT's CVT to develop new APUs. FT investors include venture capital firms Macquarie Capital Markets, NGEN Partners, and Robeco, a subsidiary of Rabobank. Fallbrook has scrapped plans to go public.
