Job Description
This role is responsible for the design and drafting of 3D models and 2D drawings that may include any of the following (based on the assigned project): define the layout and arrangement of structures, systems, and components (SSCs) of the reactor/plant design. They will coordinate the design, at the direction of responsible engineers, and perform a variety of design/drafting activities, including preparing/updating drawings for projects, preparing assembly/manufacturing drawings, and establishing guidelines and procedures for Computer Aided Design (CAD) data management. The role collects all drawings, data, and notes involved in a project and constructs the final version of the integrated project - specifying dimensions, codes, production methods, and materials in accordance with governing guides, procedures, and industry best practices.
Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities
Create relevant 3D CAD models and detailed 2D drawings of various equipment, equipment integration, plant layout, structures, systems and/or components (based on assigned project). These may include, but are not limited to: process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), isometric drawings (Isos), piping arrangements, equipment arrangements, etc.
Assess models for manufacturability as well as assembly and integration considerations.
Perform a variety of design/drafting activities for the engineering group including preparing and updating manufacturing drawings.
Serve as an information source on planning and design of equipment installations: equipment and plant engineering.
Maintain notes, design calculations and other documentation (e.g., drawings, bills of materials, lists of design parameters, and performance guarantees) for current and future reference.
Identify and follow XE processes, procedures, and guides, as well as best CAD modelling and drafting practices, and maintain communication with other team members to ensure the consistency and standardization of practices and design.
Collaborate in planning, scheduling, and organization of detailed phases of engineering work.
Adhere to filing guidelines for drawings to maintain up-to-date drawings.
Maintain system and model compatibility in X-energy's Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system and Plant Design Environments (PDE), including the 3D CAD applications.
The role may include specialization in one or more of the following areas:
Component, System Design:
Work closely with the responsible engineers to develop mechanical/ physical concepts, designs, and processes to create SSCs related to the project to which they are assigned.
Assist in the definition and development of system/component geometric interfaces.
Incorporate 3D representations of components into the plant model and verify compatibility with connecting interfaces.
For FOAK design, create and check manufacturing technical data packs and 2D detail component drawings to ensure fabricated components are produced in accordance with the design specifications.
For FOAK design, ensure SSCs are properly designed and integrated into the design of the overall system and/or plant to meet their component level functions and requirements.
For FOAK design, engage vendors in the design and manufacturing of defined and package systems and their related components. Show initiative in suggesting design changes and improvements to the design of components, factoring in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
Equipment/Plant Layout Integration Design:
Utilize S3D (formerly SmartPlant 3D) to create 3D piping design models within and supporting the SMR plant, including but not limited to equipment layout, pipe routing, pipe support design, maintenance and accessway volumes.
Utilize NX or other CAD software to develop 2D and 3D component designs.
Maintaining and checking the S3D model to ensure accuracy, and resolution of interferences.
Creating Piping isometrics, general equipment layout drawings, material take off lists etc.
Application of piping best practices and principles when routing piping.
Support procedure inputs and reviews as required.
Building relationships that will facilitate knowledge transfer, cross functional knowledge of related work groups, and ability to present work products effectively.
Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
Perform other duties as assigned by manager.

Job Profile Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree in drafting, CAD, engineering or related degree from an accredited institution or High School Diploma and experience in a role with similar tasks/responsibilities noted above.
Experience using AutoCAD Electrical strongly preferred.
Experience and/or knowledge in a minimum of one of the following areas (based on assigned type of project):
Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 (or similar standards) for Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
Experience using 3D CAD software (e.g. UG/NX, SolidWorks, PTC Creo/Pro-E, or similar).

As a mid-level Mechanical / HVAC Designer in the Amentum Nuclear Projects and Consulting business unit you will work with Senior level designers to create HVAC equipment, ductwork and piping 3D models. Additional responsibilities will include coordination with other disciplines working in BIM models, working with mechanical engineers, and designers/engineers in other disciplines to deliver a fully coordinated and collaborated project. Designer will be responsible for creating the design deliverables such as orthographic and isometric drawings. Additionally, designers will assist in interference detection and resolution as well as ensuring proper integration with other tools.
+ High School Diploma/GED
+ 5+ years using BIM tools for Plant such as: SmartPlant 3D, Revit, BIM/3D software, etc...

2D Design & Drafting
Create detailed 2D part and assembly drawings using SmartSketch or comparable 2D drafting tools.
Translate customer-supplied components, prints, or specifications into manufacturable drawings that align with internal practices.
Develop fixture and tooling layouts and update drawings for slight part variations or new customer requirements.
Ensure drawings accurately reflect manufacturable geometry, material callouts, and production needs.
Customer & Cross-Functional Support
Assist Sales, Engineering, and Customer Service by reviewing customer parts and identifying manufacturability considerations.
Provide technical input during quoting or early design discussions to help determine feasibility and required design adjustments.
Support customer conversations when needed, offering clear explanations of design approaches and production considerations.
Manufacturing & Machining Collaboration
Work closely with machining, fabrication, and assembly teams to troubleshoot issues and refine drawings.
Adjust designs based on shop-floor feedback related to fit, tooling, materials (copper, bronze, steel, mica), or machining constraints.
Help develop fixturing approaches for new or slightly modified customer parts.
Participate in problem-solving efforts tied to machining, rotation/lathe processes, or assembly challenges.
Documentation & Process Support
Maintain accurate and up-to-date drawings, revision history, BOMs, and related documentation.
Support engineering change processes and implement updates required for production.

Qualifications

Proficiency with 2D CAD drafting tools, such as SmartSketch or similar software used for producing manufacturing-ready drawings.
Experience with metal machining and fabrication, including work with materials such as copper, bronze, steel, and mica, and understanding how material properties impact manufacturability.
