15 computer architect skills for your resume and career

1. Cloud

Cloud is a server that is accessed over the internet. There are different programs and software that also run on these servers. These clouds can be accessed from anywhere in the world as they are not present in your computer storage, but have their online servers. Cloud consists of data centers all across the world.

Here's how computer architects use cloud:
  • Involved with product life cycle standardization processes, Data Center Modernization projects, Cloud Infrastructure Automation, Digital Data Transformation;
  • Identified DR opportunities that could reduce current cost for Tier 2 applications and offload data archiving to the cloud.

2. C++

C++ is a general-purpose programming language that is used to create high-performing applications. It was invented as an extension to the C language. C++ lets the programmer have a high level of domination over memory and system resources. C++ is an object-oriented language that helps you implement real-time issues based on different data functions

Here's how computer architects use c++:
  • Researched on architecture optimization MPEG1/2 Encoder (C, C++, Perl, assembly) for real-time Software only implementation.
  • Researched and implemented reduced bandwidth MPEG2 Decoder and implemented simulation code(C++) for HW implementation.

3. Cloud Computing

Here's how computer architects use cloud computing:
  • Present Cloud Computing solutions and benefits to Managers and Director Level prospects as well as Systems Managers and Administrators.
  • Align new technology in cloud computing (Atrium BMC Integrator).

4. AWS

Here's how computer architects use aws:
  • Implemented detective controls to identify potential security incidents, threat identification and response both automated and manual using AWS Cloud watch.
  • Designed automated AWS snapshot copy to different Region as solution for Disaster Recovery.

5. Azure

Here's how computer architects use azure:
  • Designed and developed security guidelines to ensure tenant isolation and integrated with Azure Access Control Service to provide ADFS based authentication.
  • Developed and configured BizTalk Service in Windows Azure for messaging connectivity for pharmacies with a drug manufacturer.

6. Java

Java is a widely-known programming language that was invented in 1995 and is owned by Oracle. It is a server-side language that was created to let app developers "write once, run anywhere". It is easy and simple to learn and use and is powerful, fast, and secure. This object-oriented programming language lets the code be reused that automatically lowers the development cost. Java is specially used for android apps, web and application servers, games, database connections, etc. This programming language is closely related to C++ making it easier for the users to switch between the two.

Here's how computer architects use java:
  • Supported students with C/C++, Java, Bash, Oracle, DB2, and Networking/TCP/IP assignments.
  • Code base highlights include use of Java Reflection to simplify automation of test harness, and use of subversion repository.

7. Linux

Linux is a Unix-like operating system. Just like Windows, Mac OS, and IOS, Linux is an operating system used by millions across the globe. Android itself is powered by the Linux operating system. Linux manages all the hardware resources that are associated with your computer. The software is famous because of the protection it grants from viruses, malware, and crashes. The Linux operating system is entirely free and is an open-source software meaning it can be altered by those equipped with the knowledge to code.

Here's how computer architects use linux:
  • Certified Solaris System Engineer and experienced in LINUX and Microsoft Windows system management.
  • Reduced costs by developing and implementing strategy for deploying Linux across enterprise versus utilizing proprietary Unix HP and Sun platforms.

8. OS

In technical terms, OS stands for "Operating System". It is a software that is used to run programs on the computer. An operating system acts as a link between the user and the hardware components. Windows, macOS, iOS, Linux are examples of an operating system.

Here's how computer architects use os:
  • Build and maintain the Computer network for Kestrel Construction including: Building the computers, Installing OS and all software needed.
  • Established three new computer sites base on Solaris and Windows 2000 OS.

9. HPC

Here's how computer architects use hpc:
  • Consulted for university academic groups and research groups HPC needs.
  • Architected, purchased, and oversaw a supercomputing (HPC) service for Engineering & R&D.

10. Virtualization

Here's how computer architects use virtualization:
  • Provide technical development regarding virtualization, software defined networking and storage, orchestration, and platform 3 applications.
  • Provided large scale virtualization effort and optimization of system performance, application tuning and compliance issues.

11. Windows

Windows is a chain of operating systems that controls a computer and is developed by Microsoft. Every version of Windows consists of GUI (graphical user interface), with a desktop that allows the user to open their files.

Here's how computer architects use windows:
  • Managed Windows Servers, Active Directory, Client Security, and Client Management Architect members.
  • Single handed installation of JDE E1 8.11 SP1 software on Windows 2003 servers.

12. CPU

Here's how computer architects use cpu:
  • Worked successfully on a team to develop a load/store CPU architecture Final design implemented on an FPGA board

13. Desktop

The term desktop commonly refers to the desktop computer also called a personal computer. A PC is named after a desktop as it is placed on or under the desk. A desktop computer consists of different accessories such as CPU, monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc. The desktop also refers to the graphical user interface that appears on a computer, displaying all the icons on the monitor screen.

Here's how computer architects use desktop:
  • Managed the desktop computing environment that includes hardware and software, defining standards, ensuring security and support.
  • Created desktop transformation strategy to save $1.2M/year.

14. Governance

Governance is the means by which countries or organizations are overseen or controlled by their leaders. This may be through laws, regulations, policies and processes that guide behaviour in a way that upholds the principles defined by the leaders. Often, they come with consequences for breach and reward for implementation.

Assistant Professor, University of Nevada - Las Vegas

I would advise architecture students to be as flexible as possible. While NAAB accredited schools award 6,000 to 7,000 professional degrees per year, NCARB states that fewer than 3,500 architects reach licensure each year. This suggests that many of those educated as architects are actually finding work in allied subjects. I know of many graduates who are set to become architects who end up becoming real estate professionals, construction professionals, policy-makers, academics, and more. Even for those dead set on architectural practice, these opportunities in adjacent fields can open doors to more design-focused practice.
