Position Summary: Produces machined parts by setting up and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine; maintaining quality and safety standards; keeping records; maintaining equipment and supplies. Essential Responsibilities: Highly skilled in advanced setup and operation of 3, 4 and 5-axis CNC machines Loads the program into the CNC machine, selects and sets up tools, loads stock, and runs the program. Plans machining by reading work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, drawings, reference plans, locations of surfaces, and machining parameters; interpreting geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T). Uploads programs (mills and lathes) by entering instructions, including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry, and trigonometry; proving part programs. Sets-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three- and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices; Loads feed mechanism by lifting stock into position. Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample work pieces Maintains specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes. Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations. Maintains equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs. Shop mathematics, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), and Feeds & Speed calculations. Use of desktop publishing software. Ability to use computerized spreadsheets to conduct analysis. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of machines, controllers, and tools (Fanuc or Mazak 1850/1060.) Ability to control operations of equipment and watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure machine is working properly. Ability to set up fixtures properly including clamping, centering, and indicating of fixture. Ability to set up cutting tools and change out inserts for cutting operation. Ability to use and understand measuring devices including calipers, micrometers, and bar gauges. High school diploma/GED preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. Vocational training a plus. 5 years of previous CNC machine set up and operation experience or equivalent experience. 4 years of experience in the aerospace manufacturing process preferred.
