The Moses H Cone Memorial Hospital history

Wesley Long Hospital Wesley Long Community Hospital was founded in 1917 by Doctor John Wesley Long.

L. Richardson Memorial Hospital and L. Richardson Nursing School The L. Richardson Memorial Hospital, Greensboro's first modern hospital for African Americans opened in 1927 on Benbow Road.

The trust fund stated that "No patient should be refused admittance because of inability to pay.". After Bertha Cone's death in 1947, her inheritance went to the trust fund that would eventually establish the hospital.

Two stories were added to the original facility in 1960, and numerous other additions have more than tripled the size of the hospital.

Cone was a segregated, whites-only hospital until 1963, when the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, in Simkins v.

1974 - Another expansion project at Moses Cone Hospital adds a radiology department, emergency department and more patient beds.

Greensboro Hospital (later Humana Hospital and Women's Hospital) Greensboro Hospital, the 63rd member of the Humana (formerly Extendicare) chain, opened in 1977 as Greensboro's first for-profit hospital.

In 1982, the name was changed to Humana Hospital-Greensboro.

1990 – The Women's Hospital of Greensboro opens as North Carolina's first free-standing hospital dedicated solely to women and newborns.

By 1994, the facility had been taken over by Vencor and was operating under the name of Vencor Hospital Greensboro.

1995 – Moses Cone Hospital and The Women’s Hospital of Greensboro become Moses Cone Health System.

Wesley Long was acquired by Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in 1996 and remains a part of the Cone Health network today.

1997 - Wesley Long Hospital joins the Moses Cone Health System.

1999 - One of Greensboro's oldest and largest private physician groups, LeBauer HealthCare, joins the Moses Cone Health System.

2000 - The 80-bed Behavioral Health Center opens to provide behavioral health services to children, adolescents and adults suffering from acute psychiatric and substance-abuse conditions.

In 2001, the company rebranded itself and the hospital under the Kindred name.

2002 - The Moses Cone Health System Regional Cancer Center opens at Wesley Long Hospital to provide comprehensive services in cancer prevention and treatment.

2011 - Moses Cone Health System is re-branded as Cone Health with a tagline of "The Network for Exceptional Care."

2012 - Cone Health Medical Group is formed with more than 400 physicians in the Triad area.

In 2013, Cone Health opened a new patient tower referred to as North Tower.

A new entrance off Church Street opened on February 1, 2014.

2016 - Cone Health officially apologized for past discriminatory practices to Alvin Blount, MD, the only surviving physician of the Simkins v Moses Cone lawsuit.

On February 23, 2020, maternity services moved to the campus of Moses Cone Hospital from Women's Hospital.
