Civil Construction Superintendent
Construction manager job in New York, NY
$200k - $215k | Superintendent | Transportation Allowance | Overtime Pay | Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision) | Bonus | New York
We've built this role for a Superintendent ready to take full ownership of a major civil build, managing field operations, site logistics, and delivering public projects (MTA/NYCT, USACE). You'll be the eyes and ears of the job, leading Engineers, Foremen, Safety, and Quality teams, while partnering closely with the Senior Project Manager to drive performance and maintain client confidence.
Our typical project size averages around $50M, with the ability to self-bond into the hundreds of millions. We maintain low turnover because we invest in people: strong pay, structured bonuses, regular reviews, and the belief that nothing gets built without those in the field making it happen.
We put a huge emphasis on tenure and follow-through. We want someone who has seen NYCT projects from start to finish, weathered the challenges, and led crews through tight schedules and complex coordination. If you've managed heavy civil field work end-to-end and can earn the respect of your team through experience rather than titles, we want to meet you.
If you're still reading, you're likely the kind of leader we're looking for. Let's have a conversation, we'd love to show you why this could be the most rewarding chapter of your career.
Construction Superintendent
Construction manager job in New York, NY
The Commercial Interiors Construction Superintendent oversees day-to-day field operations for tenant improvement and build-out projects, with a primary focus on retail, corporate office, and hospitality/restaurant environments. The role emphasizes onsite leadership-safety, quality, schedule execution, and trade coordination-rather than document control or commercial administration. Projects often involve occupied buildings, fast-track schedules, brand standards, and stringent health/sanitation or building rules.
Key Responsibilities
Lead daily onsite operations and coordinate all subcontractor activities to maintain safety, quality, and schedule for retail, corporate office, and hospitality/restaurant interiors.
Conduct daily site walks; identify and resolve field issues; document progress with photos, noting brand-standard and finish quality compliance.
Enforce site safety plan; conduct daily/weekly safety inspections and toolbox talks; adapt plans for occupied spaces and public-facing retail areas.
Implement the project schedule in the field, with 1-3 week look-aheads tailored to tenant move-in dates, grand openings, and phased turnovers.
Review drawings and specifications; ensure installations align with contract documents, brand guidelines, health department requirements (for restaurants), and the latest bulletins/addenda.
Manage RFIs from the field: surface conflicts (e.g., MEP coordination in tight ceiling plenum typical of interiors, kitchen equipment rough-ins), escalate to PM/PE for formal submission, and implement responses.
Coordinate deliveries, laydown, and logistics with building/property management; plan off-hours work common in corporate/retail settings; maintain clean, safe egress for public/tenants.
Lead daily huddles and weekly trade coordination meetings; document action items and follow up with trades and vendors (e.g., millwork, signage, FF&E, kitchen equipment).
Perform quality control checks with emphasis on high-visibility finishes, millwork alignment, lighting aiming, and equipment start-up; coordinate punch lists with design team and PM.
Support closeout: oversee completion of punch list, brand compliance checks, attic stock delivery, O&M training scheduling (including kitchen equipment), and as-built markups.
Track manpower, daily reports, deliveries, inspections, and equipment start-ups; provide concise field updates to the Project Manager.
Verify work in place to support subcontractor pay apps; flag field-driven changes (e.g., unforeseen conditions in existing cores, utility relocations) for PM pricing/processing.
Coordinate inspections and sign-offs (building, fire, health department for restaurants) and required special inspections.
Mentor field staff (Assistant Superintendent/Field Engineer) as assigned.
Professional Qualifications & Experience
3-7 years of field experience in commercial interiors/tenant improvement, specifically across retail, corporate office, and hospitality/restaurant projects.
Demonstrated ability to read drawings/specs and manage interiors means and methods, including MEP coordination, kitchen equipment rough-ins, and high-finish sequencing.
Familiarity with building codes, ADA, health department and food service requirements (for restaurants), and logistics in occupied commercial properties.
High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school or relevant technical coursework a plus.
Key Skills & Knowledge
Strong field coordination, communication, and problem-solving skills tailored to fast-track, brand-driven interiors.
Proficient with construction daily reporting tools; basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel) and plan viewing/field logs in Procore.
Working knowledge of short-interval scheduling and look-ahead planning; Microsoft Project familiarity helpful.
Commitment to site safety, finish quality, brand standards, and professional subcontractor/client relations in occupied environments.

This firm has been operating in NYC for the past 85 years! They are a well-respected firm that has a ton of work right now. They focus on commercial and institutional clients/projects (think high-end office space or healthcare office projects, etc.). The firm has a typical structure when it comes to reporting, i.e. APM, PM, SPM, PX. The office is based in Midtown Manhattan, and you would be based there day-to-day. You are also able to go visit your sites as needed, but won't need to be there every single day. Most projects are in the 5 boroughs, so public transit is enough to get the job done. No car needed. The PX and PM that you will be working with have been with the business for 8 and 16 years, respectively, so you KNOW you are learning from the best. They are both looking for a talented APM to join the team for the long term. Apparently, with the number of jobs they have plus the number of jobs that could land, they are going to need you!
Your new role
As an APM with this group, you would handle typical APM duties, such as submittals, working with insurances, assisting PM with tasks, shadowing them to learn how to be a full PM yourself, etc.! This is definitely a growth role, and the company is looking for long-term teammates. The role is mostly office-based with some visits to site, if you need. This role is for someone who has a good education in construction, a few years in the industry, and who wants to join a serious company to fast-track your career.
What you'll need to succeed
3-5+ years' experience with a general contractor.
NYC construction industry experience.
Ability to read drawings.
Familiarity with submittals through Procore.
Commercial construction experience would be preferred but not 100% mandatory.
What you'll get in return
Boost your career development with a firm that knows what it is doing (over 85 years, remember!)
Work closely with a Project Manager (and Project Executive) who has been with the business and in the industry for a long time.
Playfully serious culture. They are not here to mess around, but they are here to have a fun time building great projects.
Solid benefits, competitive for this market, for sure.
Solid pipeline of work to keep you and the company busy.
