Baltimore City Community College construction technology instructor job description

The BCCC Construction program for Industrial Maintenance Mechanics (IMM) includes virtual and in person instruction using National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum. Instruction is aligned to national standards for maintenance mechanics on the operation of machinery and mechanical equipment in industrial and commercial settings.

This program covers the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for maintenance mechanics, including completing preventive maintenance requirements on engines, motors, pumps and related building machines based on engineering specifications for equipment. Students learn blueprint reading and troubleshooting with a focus on monitoring and repair of building systems such as boilers, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Students complete the NCCER Core and Industrial Maintenance Mechanic curriculum and assessments. This includes OSHA-10 safety certification and preparation for the Stationary Engineers Licensing Exam - Grade 5 (optional) as part of the program.
Responsibilities/Duties

Plan, conduct and assess instructional activities both virtually and in person - to include occupational safety, proper use of tools, construction math, blueprint reading, introduction to construction trades, and specific skills industrial maintenance mechanics.

Conduct both virtual and in person classroom and construction lab activities based on NCCER curriculum for Construction Core and trade areas, including Industrial Maintenance Mechanic.

Maintain educational records, including but not limited to daily class attendance, tools and supply inventory, and tool control logs.

Track student achievement by coordinating and administering tests in accordance with NCCER and acceptable reporting procedures.

Develop alternative instructions (including on-line delivery) for individualized and independent study and apprenticeship requirements.

Coordinate with business and industry partners alignment to current needs and standards related to employment in Baltimore.

Provide related information and support for student completion of on-the-job training and/or transition to employment and apprenticeship programs.

Required Qualifications

Required

Bachelor's Degree. Experience beyond the work experience requirement may be substituted for the degree on a 2 years of experience for 1 year of education basis.

Construction Experience (Plumbing, HVAC, Electrical or Maintenance/Engineering)

Experience in teaching and/or workforce training and/or apprenticeship programs

Knowledge of Construction Apprenticeship programs and Core Curricula from NCCER

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience with the following:

Construction trades knowledge with certification and/or licensure in basic construction safety, building trades, maintenance/engineering, and/or apprenticeship;

Three (3) years specific construction experience related to plumbing, maintenance, carpentry, electrical, power plant and/or engineering trades;

Knowledge of plumbing/HVAC/maintenance systems including monitoring, maintenance, and repair of generators, compressors, pumps and related equipment;

Knowledge of building plans and process for inspection of structures to establish the sequence of maintenance installations, monitoring of systems, and all related safety requirements.

Experience in Training, Instruction or Supervision of Apprentices.

Essential Job Duties

  • Instruct and oversee youth training in identified career and technical development,
  • Assess and evaluate academic needs of youth; provide professional instruction and teaching to a diverse population as appropriate,
  • Advise youth on career options including providing guidance and suggestions regarding future coursework, possible specializations and other career-related topics,
  • Provide instruction related to identified career and technical development according to lesson plans, Individual Education Plans (IEP) and AMIkids Blended Learning Model incorporating other instructional strategies,
  • Design hands-on lesson plans that allow for youth to apply proper use of tools, equipment, technology and techniques necessary to perform the tasks required of the industry,
  • Create and administer oral, written or performance exams to evaluate the effectiveness of lesson plans and youth progress,
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry recognized policies/procedures/regulations,
  • Motivate and guide youth toward the successful accomplishment of established goals and objectives,
  • Effective use of the Behavior Modification System by providing redirection and coaching to youth,
  • Ensure proper use and care of PPE, physical equipment and materials; avoid or minimize any potential risk to youth or equipment damage,
  • Maintain appropriate training materials, equipment and resources and inventory,
  • Maintain timely accurate and complete youth records (includes but not limited to lesson plans and grades),
  • Document youth industry recognized certification into the national registry,
  • Serve as advisor and positive role model for youth at all times,
  • Attend appropriate crisis intervention and physical restraint training and certification as defined by state requirements and maintain certification,
  • Attend and maintain CPR and First Aid certification by nationally recognized organization,
  • Maintain cleanliness of classroom and/or work areas,
  • Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance,
  • Actively supervise/coordinate day trips and special activities that involve recreational sports, facility and equipment cleaning, grounds maintenance and equipment relocation,

Minimum Education, Training and Experience


  • High School diploma/GED, Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred,
  • Two (2) years relevant experience,
  • Prior experience working with youth a plus,
  • Ability to obtain and maintain industry specific recognized credentials.
