EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
* Certified Paraoptometric (CPO), Certified Paraoptometric Assistant
(CPOA), Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT), Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:
* Assume quality of care for all patients.
* Perform preliminary testing to include: Auto-refraction, intra-ocular pressure, neutralizing prescription eyewear (Lensometry), visual acuity, motility testing, pupil assessment, confrontation visual fields testing.
* Documentation recorded into the electronic medical record: Preliminary testing entries and patient chief complaint, medical history, medications, and social history, previous/current eyewear prescriptions, but not limited to these entries.
* Repeat testing as requested by the Optometrist, and assist Optometrist as needed.
* Escort patient throughout the exam process and transfer authority to appropriate personnel.
* Assist optician with eyeglass frame selection and Pupillary Distance (PD) measurements as needed
* Ensure equipment, both Optometrist's and pre-test, is properly maintained.
* Recommend frames that suit the patient's style, face and specifications.
* Support the ordering and dispensing glasses.
* Educate patients on how to wear and maintain glasses and contact lenses.
* Perform administrative duties, such as managing prescriptions, patient records, and insurance.
* Submit necessary documentation to insurances to obtain replacement glasses as necessary.
* Provide clinical support to Optometrist as permitted by state law.
* Collaborate with schools to support the provision of vision services for children throughout Health Partners service areas.
* Assist with set up of mobile equipment.
* Document all patient care provided according to policy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is mostly sedentary demanding sitting, some walking, lifting, and bending. Those physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with duties in an office setting will be performed on a repetitive basis. This also includes bending, twisting, reaching, lifting, pulling, pushing, and walking. The ability to distinguish letters and symbols as well as the ability to utilize telephones, computer terminals, fax machines, and copiers is required. Company: Valley Eye Institute Job Title: Surgical Technician Department: Operating Room Reports To: Charge Nurse
Assists in surgical operations under the supervision of Surgeons, Registered Nurses and Surgical Assistants. Assists in the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established Federal, State and accreditation standards and company policies and procedures. Assists the Nurses and Surgeons in delivering the highest standard of patient care available.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs their duties in an ethical and legal manner within the scope of their certification.
Complies with HIPAA regulations.
Ability to scrub all types of cases performed at the company.
Ability to anticipate the needs of the Surgeon and has equipment, medical gases and supplies readily available for all procedures.
Participates in continuing education/in-service training as needed, staff meetings, and Q.A.P.I. program.
Knowledge of central and sterile supply department.
Opens all sterile packs according to sterile technique and prepares instruments as needed.
Helps prepare Operating Room by setting up surgical instruments, ensuring equipment works properly, labeling sterile solutions.
Helps gather supplies and equipment in the room.
Maintains record on field of medication used intra-operatively, specimens retrieved, tissue implanted, implants, liquids or chemicals on field.
Passes instruments and other sterile supplies to surgical assistants.
May hold retractors, cut suture, help count sponges, needles or blades if applicable.
Prepares, cares for and disposes of specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
Operates sterilizer, lights, suction, and other Operating Room equipment and diagnostic equipment.
Assists in patient transfer to PACU, if needed.
Helps clean and restock operating room.
Assists with any technical function under supervision of system to carry out a safe operation.
Preps, drapes and positions the patient for surgery.
Prepares for case according to Surgeon's preference card.
Gathers supplies needed and anticipates needs for case.
Assists in orientation of new staff when needed.
Actively participates in the development of a healthy work environment.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to prioritize, plan, and implement patient care within the scope of their practice.
Ability to handle stress associated with prioritizing multiple tasks.
Needs manual dexterity to handle instruments.
Must be emotionally conscientious, orderly, and emotionally stable to handle the OR environment.
Has the ability to adhere to work schedule, be organized, manage time effectively and in a cost effective manner.
Above average organization skills.
Able to effectively work within a team.
Above average communication skills: verbal and written.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED equivalent required
Two (2) years of hospital main operating room experience preferred
LICENSES AND CREDENTIALS
Certified Surgical Technician (CST) certification preferred
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required

About the role
Optometric Technicians work in conjunction with the doctors to perform activities involving patient care, pre-testing, post-exam duties, specialty testing, and maintain the doctor's appointment schedule in a manner that delivers a professional, pleasant patient experience.
Performs preliminary evaluation of patients prior to exam by the OD, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, etc.

Participates in Practice meetings / projects as requested

Calls all no-shows or cancelled patients to reschedule appointments
Performs contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manages the contact lens trial inventory

· Maintenance: Maintain the lab area and equipment in a safe and organized manner. Perform daily, weekly, and monthly lab equipment maintenance as scheduled and in accordance with lab/equipment manual specifications.
· Operational Excellence: Perform multiple concurrent tasks at several different equipment stations to maintain acceptable job flow. Fill out all assigned reporting forms in a timely manner.
Requirements:
· High School Diploma or GED
· Experience working in a lab or technical setting
· Experience working in the optical industry is preferred
· Must be able to read, comprehend, and follow technical manuals and protocols
