Continental Tire company history timeline
In 1995, Continental completed construction of a new DM 180 million manufacturing plant in Lousado, Portugal.
In 1995, von Grunberg established Continental's Automotive Systems division to pursue research and technology in automotive electronics, which promised much higher profit margins than tires.
In 1997, Von Grunberg's goal was to realize 40 percent of Continental's tire production from such low-cost sites.
One of the key innovations of this group, introduced in 1997, was an electromechanical brake system called the Integrated Starter Alternator Damper (ISAD).
In 1998 Continental broadened its investment in auto components with the $1.93 billion purchase of ITT Industries' brake and chassis business.
In 1999, Continental forged even further ahead with its investment in electronic safety systems.
The following years focused entirely on the intensive search for an “intelligent tire.” As early as 1999, new systems, modules, and functions were presented in a brochure.
One of its most significant acquisitions came in 2001 when it bought a controlling interest in DaimlerChrysler's Temic auto-electronics business.

In 2002, weathering continued instability in the economic climate, Continental resumed broad restructuring, including widespread job cuts and plant closures.
The ContiSportContact 2 Vmax is unveiled in 2003, the world’s first road tire approved for speeds of up to 360 km/h.
In 2007, Continental acquires Siemens VDO Automotive AG and became one of the top five suppliers in the automotive industry worldwide.
The ContiLifeCycle rolls out in 2013, addressing the service life of Continental truck tires.
After the turn of the millennium, Continental launched an “intelligent tire” with an integrated sensor for the first time and in 2015 its product line included the fastest tire approved for road traffic.
In 2017, two new tire systems were finally presented at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, which were intended to mark a new stage on the long road to intelligent tires.
The experimental laboratory “Taraxagum Lab Anklam” is opened in 2018 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.
2020 is the 25th anniversary of Continental entering the market in China.
2021 is a special year for Continental: On October 8, our company will celebrate its 150th anniversary.
