This Position reports to: Senior Engineering Manager Your role and responsibilities: As the Sr. Protection & Control Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and executing the protection and control engineering components of projects and ensure that all related activities are performed in accordance with ABB policy, contractual agreements, quality standards, HSE requirements, financial targets, and schedule commitments. Also, you will be responsible for engineering analysis and troubleshooting for automation, control, and protection in power systems. For this position, we are open to candidates being full remote or working out of our Houston, TX or Lake Mary, FL offices. This role is contributing to the Electrification Distribution Solutions group in the United States. You will be mainly accountable for: * Engineering & Technical Execution: Lead protection and control engineering design for MV/LV systems, including relay selection, logic implementation, IEC61850 configuration, documentation, and testing support (FAT/SAT). * Customer & Sales Engagement: Provide presales technical support, develop proof-of-concept demos, and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure customer requirements are met. * Process Improvement & Risk Management: Drive continuous improvement initiatives, manage change processes, and assess project risks to ensure timely and quality delivery of engineering solutions. * Communication & Collaboration: Effectively communicate technical concepts across teams and levels, coordinate engineering tasks, and contribute to planning and control of protection and control architectures. Qualifications for the role: * Bachelors Degree and of 12 years of relevant experience strongly preferred. Masters Degree preferred. Candidates with no degree and commensurate experience will also be considered. * Minimum of 8 years of experience in power systems design / testing / commissioning regarding protection and control. * Must possess a strong technical background and knowledge of protection and control systems for LV / MV and HV power systems. * Must be familiar with power system architectures, troubleshooting tools for protection systems and power systems analysis. * Proven experience with IEC 61850 based substation automation schemes. * Experience with other protective relay communication protocols including DNP & Modbus is highly desirable. * Customer focused. The Precise Time Department is responsible for the maintenance and dissemination of the USNO timescale, UTC (USNO), to customers across the entire globe. The WWVH radio station in Kauai, Hawaii was founded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 1948 to augment time dissemination capabilities in the Pacific Rim. The station has been operating near-continuously since, providing critical signals for remote clock synchronization, navigation, ionospheric research, and equipment calibration to this day. The Work The successful candidate will provide engineering support and supervision of technical staff at the WWVH station.
