The best certifications for a controls engineer are Engineer In Training Certification (EIT), Electric Vehicle Technician (EVT), and Project Management Professional (PMP).
Controls engineer certifications demonstrate your competency as a controls engineer to employers. However, not all controls engineer certifications provide the same value.
Below is a list of the best controls engineer certifications. Obtaining a controls engineer certification will give you a leg up when you apply for jobs and increase your potential salary.
| Rank | Controls engineer certification | Organization |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Engineer In Training Certification (EIT) | NCEES |
| 2 | Electric Vehicle Technician (EVT) | ETA |
| 3 | Project Management Professional (PMP) | PMI |
| 4 | Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) | NI, |
The EIT Certification, which is formally known as the Engineer In Training Certification, is simply a document, a number, granted by the individual’s state engineering board after they pass the Engineer In Training Exam. The Engineer in Training Exam (EIT Exam) is the first of two exams you will take as you move towards obtaining your Professional Engineering License (PE). This exam, which you may also hear referred to as the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE Exam), is developed and administered in all states (and a number of locations outside the US) by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The FE Exam is offered to eligible students year-round in four different testing windows.
Electric Vehicle Technicians work on vehicles powered solely by electricity. They perform routine maintenance like other mechanics; however, Electric Vehicle Technicians must have extensive knowledge of how lithium-ion batteries and automotive systems interact. In addition, they may replace hydraulically assisted systems with electric-powered systems, such as power-steering pumps or air-conditioning compressors, to improve fuel economy. Certification is for individuals interested in attaining training from an ETA® International approved EV school. In this program students will develop skills in safety, troubleshooting and repairing of Electric Vehicles. Due to the high voltage (300 VDC and above) and safety issues involved, technicians are required to receive specialized training in both knowledge and hands-on skill items.
The PMP designation following your name tells current and potential employers that you have demonstrated a solid foundation of knowledge from which you can competently practice project management. To be eligible for a PMP Credential, you must first meet specific educational and project management experience requirements and agree to adhere to a code of professional conduct. The final step to becoming a PMP is passing a rigorous multiple-choice examination designed to objectively assess and measure your ability to apply project management knowledge in the following six domains: initiating the project, planning the project, executing the project, monitoring and controlling the project, closing the project, and professional and social responsibility. This computer-based examination is administered globally with translation aids in 10 languages.
The NI LabVIEW certification path includes three steps. The second step is the Certified LabVIEW Developer, which indicates the ability to design and develop functional programs while minimizing development time and ensuring maintainability through proper documentation and style. You can use this certification for assessment and validation of an individual's LabVIEW development skills for the purpose of project staffing or career advancement.
The best controls engineer certification is Engineer In Training Certification (EIT). The Engineer In Training Certification (EIT) is awarded by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
