This role involves building high-quality imaging environments that enable reliable automated inspection across industrial settings. The position is remote, with up to 50% travel for on-site scoping, installation, and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
Design and configure camera, lens, filter, and lighting systems to support robust and repeatable imaging for automated inspection.
Perform illumination analysis using advanced lighting strategies (backlights, dome lights, ring lights, structured light, etc.) to improve feature contrast and reduce imaging artifacts.
Evaluate and select machine vision cameras and sensors (CMOS, CCD) based on application requirements such as resolution, sensitivity, and frame rate.
Develop mechanical designs-including mounts, brackets, and enclosures-ensuring imaging hardware is stable and reliable in active industrial environments.
Produce engineering documentation, layouts, and schematics using SolidWorks or comparable CAD tools.
Collaborate closely with vision engineers, controls/automation personnel, and plant operations teams to ensure seamless system integration.
Oversee contractors and vendors responsible for fabricating and installing imaging hardware solutions.
Troubleshoot and optimize imaging systems by addressing lighting inconsistencies, focus issues, vibration, or sensor configuration problems.
Lead field installation efforts, support commissioning activities, and fine-tune imaging and lighting performance during deployment.
Establish hardware standards, best practices, and documentation for scalable and repeatable systems.
Develop preventive maintenance procedures for imaging hardware and partner with plant teams to ensure consistent upkeep.
Implement automated monitoring tools for camera and lighting performance, setting thresholds and alerts for early detection of degradation.
Stay current with evolving imaging technologies, optical components, and illumination methodologies to enhance system capability over time.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, Computer Vision, or related discipline; or 8+ years of relevant hands-on hardware engineering experience.
Practical expertise with machine vision cameras, optics, filters, and industrial lighting solutions.
Knowledge of illumination techniques for challenging surfaces (reflective, textured, curved, low contrast).
Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD tools for mechanical design and documentation.

2. As a technical expert, provides risk control perspective across an entire account portfolio. Utilizes corporate and location level details to build a broad account level view of exposures and controls.
3. Produces desktop risk control evaluations that are comprehensive and able to inform underwriting decisions by leveraging third party engineering reports, insurance risk assessments, publicly available information, and data evaluation tools.
4. Develops global account strategies to positively impact loss ratios, new business goals and retention requirements to achieve profitability targets for the BU.
5. Develops and maintains business relationships with internal and external business partners. Known expert among Risk Control staff and CNA partners within SBU, actively shaping new industry relationships.

**This position will have travel up to 30%.
The Engineer III (Controls) candidate will complete all phases of control system design and implementation within an appropriate scope of work, timeframe, and cost structure and will work under the supervision of the Controls Manager. The deliverables from this role include electrical engineering design and documentation, programming for logic controllers and visualization interfaces, and technical support for key customers.
For assigned product lines, maintain a fully documented and accurate electrical design and electrical controls programs that comply with established Evergreen and industry standards.
Maintain a cost balance for the electrical design that achieves the lowest base cost with the highest manufacturing efficiency and lowest warranty. This balance should also account for the highest operational efficiency and lowest maintenance requirement.
Produce electrical design/program changes to support sale orders, product improvements, change requests and non-conformances for assigned product lines.
Provide timely, complete, and consistent technical support to internal and external business customers as required in support of assigned product lines.
Support the Controls Team to increase output, standardization, and repeatability of designs and programs through developing and continuously improving engineering tools and work processes.
The Controls Engineer will to complete all phases of the assigned accountabilities to a successful conclusion within the projected scope, timeframe, and budget. The assigned projects will be completed with minimal oversight from the Controls Manager. Collaboration with fellow Controls and Mechanical engineers is key.
Assignments will typically be with newer and mid-market level models with occasional sale order specials and product extensions. A solid technical knowledge of electrical system design and programing is key for this position, where the Controls Engineer is able to handle most assignments at a standard level of technology with minimal oversight.
The Controls Engineer in this position will provide a reasonable amount of support and training for lower-level staff and be able to coordinate a portion of their work through others.

Required Experience:
5 years of direct experience as a controls engineer working on automated processes, equipment, and system integration in a manufacturing environment.

OVERVIEW
Join our team as an Automation Controls Engineer!
This is a hybrid role based out of our Maumee office. The position is salaried and includes eligibility for overtime pay.
This position requires control systems development experience. The Automation Controls Engineer performs assignments and can create specifications when little or no specifications are provided. Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard programming techniques, procedures, and criteria. Under supervision, this employee may direct one or more small projects and may have one or more programmers to supervise on projects.
Project work involves a variety of clients in multiple industries using various control platforms. Automation Controls Engineers interface with both external clients as well as other internal engineering disciplines within the Matrix organization to gather field data, prepare functional specifications, write DCS and/or PLC code, develop HMI graphics, perform client acceptance testing, and start-up new automation systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Learn and follow industry, Matrix, and client safety practices and procedures. Helps supervise and direct the site team on safety issues.
Helps develop safety guidelines specific to control systems. Responsible for compliance with company and site safety policies
Learn and follow Matrix Standards and Procedures. Mentors others in the use of them. Participate in the scrutiny and continuous improvement of the same.
Learn and follow the Matrix Project Methodology.
Prepare project scopes of work, preliminary design concepts, and cost estimates. Assist in gathering field data and preparing project specifications. Report project performance.
Lead the project team through the software development process associated with both existing and new DCS/PLC-based control systems. These systems often include the design of new operator graphic screens, interfaces to other control systems, and interfaces to external computing platforms.
Lead the preparation of functional specifications, project test specifications, developing DCS/PLC code, developing HMI graphics, executing a software Factory Acceptance Test, and performing on-site commissioning and start-up.
Develop high-quality, error-free industrial software programs in keeping with the defined project requirements.
Responsible for effective communication with other engineering disciplines to coordinate & collaborate on designs.
May serve as a client sponsor to help identify new project opportunities, including leading proposal efforts. Become a trusted resource for your clients.
Provide leadership and guidance to less experienced engineers.

QUALIFICATIONS
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States now or in the future without employer sponsorship.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited college or university
Minimum three years of controls, automation, and electrical troubleshooting and start-up experience.
EPC project experience preferred.
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Professional Engineering (PE) certification preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates with Allen-Bradley, Rockwell Automation, Siemens, and Aveva experience. Experience with protocols including Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Modbus TCP/IP. Knowledge in Process Control Network Architecture design.
Varied industrial background is a plus. Key industries include food and beverage, chemical, consumer products, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing.
Ability to travel approximately 25%, both locally and overnight.
Able to access required client work sites.

We offer
market-competitive compensation for an Electrical Controls Engineer with a base range of
$76,000 to $99,000
annually
and a total compensation package that includes quarterly bonuses, 401(k) matching, and overtime pay. Salaries are based on experience, skills, and qualifications.
