The electric delivery system in Maine contains approximately 2,600 miles of transmission lines & 317 substations. The electric delivery system in New York contains approximately 5,600 miles of transmission lines & 621 substations (for a total of 8,200 miles and 965 substations). Consult and guide project engineers on protection engineering for electric transmission and substation system protection projects to ensure system reliability and safety. Guide engineering studies to evaluate equipment, system effectiveness, and protection system operations. Lead and guide the Protection Engineering group across AVANGRID in their technical training and development. Evaluate and implement new and advanced technology platforms to increase reliability and efficiency. Ensure all protection system standards and designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards (IEC, IEEE, NESC, FERC, NERC, NPCC, NYISO, ISO-NE, NY PSC, and ME PUC). Liaison across Operating Companies, across global affiliates, with different departments, and with outside groups and agencies. Contributes to the development of System Protection strategy.
Key Responsibilities
* Guide engineering design, estimating, and analysis of the electric transmission and substation protection systems in support of capital construction budget and keeping system performance enhancement in line with budget. Responsible for protection system platforms, including settings, testing, and commissioning developed both internally and by contractors and consultants. (20%)
* Responsible for the development of the system protection platform for AVANGRID and coordination with global affiliates; including integration, settings, networking, engineering criteria, construction standards, design and equipment specifications, integration schemes, automation configurations, commissioning plans, and requirements for engineering suppliers and contractors. Oversee the evaluation and demonstration of new technology in terms of safety, cost and other efficiencies; and implement to enhance power system performance. (25%)
* Oversee engineering studies to evaluate equipment and protection system performance and effectiveness and analyze operational issues in support of system reliability and operational efficiency. Develop and validate information needed for engineering analyses and apply engineering judgment to solve complex technical problems. (15%)
* Provide expertise and guide the analysis of transmission fault event operations to ensure protection scheme operated as intended. Ensure clear and concise fault analysis reports to management depicting corrective actions and lessons learned when necessary. (15%)
* Represent the company on regional and national committees. (10%)
* Lead and guide the technical development of the Protection Engineering group. (15%)

* As the primary protection engineering expert within the USA organization, provide a high level of consultation on diverse and highly complex problems, and on emerging technological, regulatory, or political issues.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university is required, a power focus is preferred. Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate or ability to obtain EIT certificate within one year of date of hire is required. Prior internship and/or related work experience in the power field is preferred.

Knowledge of electrical AC/DC fundamentals
Basic knowledge of three phase power systems

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the general direction of the Assistant Manager of Engineering, this position encompasses electrical engineering duties under a variety of focus areas. including transmission and distribution protection analysis, substation planning, design, specifications, procurement, and commissioning.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Understand one-lines, three-lines, schematic diagrams, wiring and connection diagrams for area of Engineering focus.
Project management responsibilities, where applicable, including fiscal control, reporting and closing of projects.
Understand the use of technical test equipment and oversight of the associated data and results.
Interact with area field personnel, providing Engineering oversight and technical assistance as needed.
Understanding of applicable standards and regulations per specific focus area of Electrical Engineering.
Ability to develop solutions per system needs.
Ability to work collaboratively with other Engineers and other departments.
Understanding basic electrical theory and the application to a Power Utility.
FOCUS AREA - COMMUNICATION:
Engineering design, material specification, cost estimates, justification and procurement for capital projects driven by customers or internal capital requests for sub stations, communication sites, AMI infrastructure.
Perform Fiber Optic Network Design, testing and troubleshooting.
Perform system maintenance for communications systems including microwave, SONET, and radio.
Work with vendors on two-way radio systems maintenance and ongoing improvements.
Working with the Legal department, develop and administer various lease agreements, such as communications site leases and fiber leases with other companies.
Perform radio propagation and Path Design.
Install and commission communication circuits over ICON and JMUX SONET Networks.
REQUIRED OR PREFERRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
BS degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology required. Related field experience in focus area will be considered.
Experience with PC based software including excel spreadsheets, AutoCAD, CYME & CAPE preferred.
Position requires identity verification and seven-year criminal background check with update at least every seven years pursuant to NERC standards.
Maine driver's license required.
