The Role
As a Lead Controls Engineer, you will collaborate with the Controls Engineering Manager, Technical Leaders, and cross-functional teams to support meeting the vision of the Controls group with proving insight and ideas on improvements (processes, standards, best practices, and tools) that boost the team's effectiveness and efficiency. Controls Engineers/Project Leads, handle cradle-to-grave large projects and lead the charge on every aspect of electrical and robotics design and programming and are the keys to making a multi-million-dollar systems a success. This position reports to VP of Controls Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide expertise and guidance to the engineering team during the early project stages to develop functional specifications and set design direction.
* Design and develop code for automation equipment (PLCs, HMIs, Industrial Robots, Vision Systems) aligning with functional requirements and Convergix's internal programming standards.
* Leads the team (Electrical, Controls, & Robotics leads) through the development of task lists with estimated hours and sets milestones based on the schedule (trained)
* Responsible for project performance, by acting as the Controls Project Lead, with respect to achieving/defining functional targets, meeting/beating project budgets, ensuring on-time delivery of scope, and delivering an extraordinary customer experience.
* Responsible for driving the best controls solution to meet the functional requirements of the projects by applying best practices and standards while working with the cross-functional team.
* Drive high engineering excellence into projects through the application of critical thinking, judgement, and strong risk management strategies.
* Drive controls specific project meetings (offline programming reviews, design reviews, Stage-Gates, etc), as led by the Controls Project Lead, to articulate risks, challenges, and approaches to gain confidence from internal teams and the customer.
* Support project status updates, forecasting, and issues/risks to the Project Manager or Controls Leadership proactively, while proposing developing plans to ensure successful projects.
* Support coaching and mentoring of project team members success through active oversight of Offline programming, Commissioning, Product testing, deliverables, and cross-functional support.
* Assist the mechanical and electrical design teams in the selection, testing, and integration of hardware such as robots, motion controllers, sensors, and vision systems
* Perform any additional reasonable tasks as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
* Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (four-year college or university) or two to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Physical ability to lift at least 25lbs, work safely on ladders, narrow walkways, and man lifts
* Have experience leading schematic design, HMI, PLC, or GDU developments
* Be proficient in one of the following
* Schematic Creation
* PLC Programming
* System Design
* Robotics Design and Programming
* Have experience leading controls projects over 5M with a team of 5 or more is preferred

SUMMARY: The Controls Engineer will apply knowledge of Controls and Mechanical Technology to new and existing processes to maximize Overall Equipment Effectiveness. Train, coach, and mentor manufacturing and technical personnel. Reports directly to the Maintenance Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Assist in the development and design of the controls software packages utilizing Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and/or Human/Machine Interfaces (HMI).
Develop tools and documents to troubleshoot problems quickly.
Engineer control hardware / software upgrades necessary to improve operating efficiency of equipment.
Examines and understands specifications in order to ensure the functionality of the equipment meets these specifications.
Modification of process equipment control system to ensure maximum production output while minimizing down-time: this includes modifications to improve plant-wide costs and efficiencies.
Ensures the equipment being started up and commissioned operates in accordance with company requirements.
Programs robotic and/or controls equipment per company specifications.
Performs preventative maintenance as requested by the customer to ensure minimum down-time and optimum operation of machines and equipment.
Train maintenance technicians in equipment operation and troubleshooting.
Maintain specification standards for new and existing process equipment control systems.
Repair and troubleshoot new and existing process equipment control systems.

Thorough knowledge of electro-mechanical control devices. (optical, inductive, capacitive sensors / contactors, relays, switches / power supplies and transformers / motors and motor starters.)
Knowledge of Common Machine Guarding Devices. (Bumper Strips, Light Curtains, Area Scanners, etc.)
Experience with vision systems.
Read and understand electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic schematics and prints
Provide support as needed to various manufacturing facilities.
Experience conducting risk assessment of equipment to determine compliance to code. (OSHA, NFPA, RIA)
Strong Knowledge of electrical safety and machine guarding.
Computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, etc.)
Ability to interact professionally with all levels of management.
