Converse University company history timeline

1889

Believing that "the well-being of any country depends on the culture of the women," he left one-third of his estate to found the College in 1889 so that his only daughter could receive a good education at home in South Carolina.

1890

Converse College opened on October 1, 1890, with a student body of 168 women and 16 faculty members.

1896

In 1896, the college was incorporated in South Carolina and a self-perpetuating board of trustees was named.

1909

Converse College, Spartanburg, in 1909.

1964

In 1964, the college introduced graduate programs.

2003

In 2003, the college completed the most successful capital campaign in its history with $82.5 million in private gifts.

2006

In 2006, Converse became the first women’s college to attain the prestigious All-Steinway School distinction.

2018

In 2018, Converse expanded its reach by joining the University Center in Greenville.

2020

On February 7, 2020, after many months of careful deliberation and research, Converse College decided to expand its undergraduate residential program from single-gender to co-ed beginning in Fall 2020.

2021

The college changed its name to "Converse University" in the summer of 2021.

The college also "expanded its undergraduate residential program from single-gender to co-ed" by admitting male undergraduate students in the fall of 2021.
