Founded in 1647, Boston Public Schools (BPS) is the oldest public school district in the country. With approximately 49,000 students from over 114 different countries, nearly 8,000 employees, and an annual budget of $973 million, the BPS is the largest district in Massachusetts and one of the most diverse as well.
Currently BPS has 125 schools with two different food service delivery models. The majority of schools have full service kitchens with a full time cafeteria manager and subordinate staff. The remaining schools and programs are satellite sites receiving meals from a consolidated production facility. The district serves approximately 17,000 breakfasts, 25,000 lunches, and 2,100 after school meals per day. During the summer months BPS serves roughly 22,000 meals at sites all over the city. BPS has been approved for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP); which enables the district to provide free meals to all Boston students.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Boston Public Schools and Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) are seeking a Standby Senior Cook who is dependable, flexible, accountable, confident and works well with others. The Standby Senior Cook is a full time position assigned to FNS Central Office. The Standby Senior Cook will be deployed to schools and kitchens on an as needed basis to provide coverage for a vacant Senior Cook or Prep Cook. This is an exciting opportunity for student and food service centered individuals who wish to gain experience in different schools and kitchens across the District. This unique opportunity includes placements in our schools and kitchens that need your help the most.
The Standby Senior Cook is responsible for creating a welcoming meal experience for students through the safe preparation, handling, cooking, and service of food in large scale quantities; providing customer service, cleaning the kitchen and associated food service equipment, and assisting with record keeping. A Standby Senior Cook evaluates food for quality, quantity, appearance, temperature and taste.
The position requires travel to all neighborhoods in the City of Boston. Location may vary daily.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs duties involved in the safe preparation and handling of food, cleaning and sanitizing of equipment and facilities, and serving of food.
Maintains knowledge of the standard methods, techniques, safety practices and procedures used in food handling, storage, preparation, cooking and serving.
Safely prepares food in quantities following standard recipes and established procedures; adjusts recipe yield as needed to produce required amounts.
Reads and uses computer generated standard menus and recipes to prepare meals.
Evaluates food for quality, quantity, appearance, temperature and taste through observation and tasting in order to determine if it is fresh, properly portioned and prepared correctly.
Operates kitchen equipment properly and in a safe manner to portion and/or prepare food.
Transports food to and from service areas.
Assists kitchen personnel in proper portion control, preparation and meal service.
Sets up the serving line and serves meals
Ensures cleaning and sanitizing of cooking equipment and work areas.
Completes Production Records, inventory sheets, meal counts and other department paperwork.
Communicates with Culinary team and Cafeteria manager regarding menu feedback
Operates the POS, as needed
Provides outstanding customer service to students and other stakeholders
Contributes to a positive and inclusive work environment and works as part of a team.
Attends culinary and food service training.
Follows all policies of the School Committee, FNS Department and instructions of the Cafeteria Manager relating to safety measures, sanitation practices, personnel standards, work techniques, and methods of performing duties.
Performs duties as assigned by the Cafeteria Manager.
Performs other related work as required.
Qualifications - Required:
At least one year experience in preparation and cooking in an institutional food service setting.
High school diploma or GED required
Food Safety Certification for Managers

Culinary Specialists (CSs) operate and manage Navy messes and living quarters established to subsist and accommodate Navy personnel. They prepare menus, manage subsistence inventories, and maintain financial records. It is commonly accepted that the "mess decks," or dining areas aboard ships, are the "heart of the ship." The role they play in the morale of the ship is very important. CSs are needed on every ship and shore base in the Navy. Navy Culinary Specialists provide food service catering for admirals and senior government executives and operate the White House Mess for the President of the United States.
Responsibilities
The duties performed by Culinary Specialists include:
Preparing menus and ordering the quantities and types of food items necessary to prepare meals.
Operating kitchen and dining facilities.
Maintaining subsistence inventories and financial records.
Serving as personal food service specialists in commanding officers and admirals messes.
Operating and managing shipboard living quarters and shore-based hotel-type quarters.
Serving as a flight attendant aircrewman.
What to Expect
Culinary Specialists work in kitchens, dining areas, living quarters, and food service storerooms aboard ships and shore bases. The work is both physically and mentally challenging and involves working as part of a team.
Work Environment
CSs spend approximately 60% of their time assigned to fleet units and 40% to shore stations over a 20-year career. Their work environments include shipboard galleys, mess decks, and
shore-based facilities, which can be fast-paced and require attention to detail.
Training & Advancement
After completing Recruit Training, CSs attend a seven-week A school in Fort Lee, VA, where they learn food preparation, nutrition, and dining service. Placement and advancement opportunities are excellent for qualified applicants. Advanced technical and operational training is available later in their careers.
Education Opportunities
CSs can earn college credits through the American Council on Education for courses taken in this rating. Additionally, the United States Naval Community College (USNCC) offers degree
programs, including a Naval Studies Certificate, that contribute toward an associate degree. These programs support professional development and educational advancement. CSs may also take advantage of voluntary education programs such as the Navy College Program, Tuition Assistance, and the Post-9/11 GI Bill to further their education while serving.

Performs snow cleanup during timeouts for UMass Lowell and Fleet hockey games
Ensures a clean and safe ice surface for UMass Lowell and Fleet hockey games
Acts as representative for the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell to the general public, must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of game day protocols and procedures
Deals knowledgably, pleasantly and professionally with the other crew
Responsible for keeping game running smoothly and on time
Arrives early and stays late to assist with game prep and breakdown

Must have an above average ice skating ability - experienced hockey players and figure skaters preferred

The Serving Ourselves Kitchen at Quincy Street helps the Bureau achieve its goals by providing vocational training and employment program for homeless individuals. Summary: The Cook Assistant supports the meals program in accordance with GWHC policies and procedures to conform to federal/state/city requirements. The Cook Assistant needs to ensure that food quality standards, inventory levels, food safety guidelines, and customer service expectations are met under the supervision of the Lead Cook or Kitchen Manager. The cook assistant will be responsible for reporting any food/kitchen/donation issues to the GWHC Manager on Duty.

Primary Responsibilities:
Supports a cost-effective program through careful planning and optimum utilization of all food product and equipment.
In the absence of the Kitchen manager or the Staff Cook, the Assistant will be responsible for preparation and distribution of food as directed by Kitchen Manager policy and procedures.
Ensures that established sanitation and safety standards are practiced while serving in the capacity of Food Services Assistant.
Assure a clean and presentable Dining Room for Guests, Volunteers and Staff.
Collaborates with community involvement with the GWHC with other public agencies, provider partners, faith communities and business organizations practicing a positive working environment and positive customer service standards as set out by the Kitchen Manager
Duties include providing tabulation of in-kind contributions as required by our DCHD grant.
Works collaboratively with volunteers, stipend workers and staff to assure a positive working environment.
Responsible for reporting issues of security and safety to the Manager in charge.
Engage all clients by understanding and addressing their needs whether within or outside the scope of work.
Attend & participate in team meetings as requested and communicate effectively with clients and staff in other areas.
Maintain confidentiality of client, employee, and agency information in accordance with federal and state laws and funder requirements.
Ensure compliance with program/department, agency, and/or funder requirements, as well as, SMOC policies & procedures.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
High School diploma or GED or demonstrated kitchen experience.
Serv-Safe training is preferred or trained in food safety guidelines by Kitchen Manager.
Commitment to the mission of the GWHC and its target population.

Physical Requirement:
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: As part of the responsibilities of this position, the Cook Assistant will have direct or incidental contact with clients served by SMOC in various programs funded or administered through the Executive Office of Health and Human Services. A successful background check is required.
Monday through Friday: 10:30AM - 6:30PM. Includes a 1-hour unpaid meal break.
