What You Will Do:
The Cook is responsible for preparing breakfasts, lunches and dinners using existing recipes and methods for groups of up to 200 people. The Cook washes dishes and sometimes functions as host and performs daily sweeping, mopping, restroom cleaning and other general cleaning. This position is seasonal from approximately mid February through approximately mid November.
This position takes place at our campus in Olympic National Park, and cannot be performed remotely.
Your primary job will be to:
Prepare, serve and clean up after meals in accordance with established procedures and checklists.
Check in and put away food deliveries, keep storage areas organized.
Maintain a safe and clean working environment. Perform daily cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, restroom cleaning and other general cleaning.
Monitor and record cooking and food storage temperatures in accordance with U.S. public health standards.
Perform physical tasks requiring lifting up to 50 pounds such as moving equipment, supplies and furniture.
Establish and maintain positive relationships with all staff, guests and Olympic National Park visitors and staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.

$20.00-22.00/hour

About the Position
The Assistant Cook supports the Head Cook in preparing nutritious, well-balanced meals for campers and staff during summer overnight camps. This position typically works two meals per camp day and assumes leadership of the Kitchen Assistants when the Head Cook is not on duty.
Compensation for this position is $122 - $132 per day, with the starting rate dependent on previous employment at GSWW camps.
Camp Season 2026 will run from June 7th through August 18th, with start and end dates determined by position. Overnight camp staff will divide their summer between Camp Robbinswold (located in Lilliwaup, WA) and Camp St. Albans (located in Allyn, WA). They will begin at St. Albans for the first week of training, then transition to Robbinswold for the second week. Staff will work three one-week camper sessions at Robbinswold, take a short break, and then complete three sessions at St. Albans.
Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in the daily operations of the camp's food service including preparing and cooking food as the menu indicates and ensuring safe storage of food and leftovers at proper temperatures
Assist in routine sanitation of the kitchen and related equipment including cleaning and maintaining all food preparation and storage areas and oversee the cleaning of prep, serving, and dining hall dishes
Coordinate schedule and job tasks with the Special Diets and Pack Out Coordinator and Kitchen Assistants
Assist with supervising and directing the work of the Kitchen Assistants
Carry out established duties for general camp operations including camp cleaning, season opening and closing tasks, and completion of necessary paperwork

POSITION PURPOSE
The Cook 2 guides, supports and actively participates in all aspects of production and service of a variety of foods/cuisines, including cutting meat and seafood, making sauces and/or cooking proteins. During the service phase of the workday, the Cook 2 prepares menu items to customer order and provides direction to the staff who would be involved in assembling foods, plating, grilling and performing the sales transactions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Review menus and recipes and consult with Manager on the production goals for the day/week.
Develop prep and order specifications derived from multiple recipes at various stations.
Prepare menu items from scratch ingredients.
Ensure the successful and timely execution of the menu, consulting with the culinary leadership if exceptions occur.
Assign, instruct and check the work of all kitchen staff, delegating to cooks and leads, as appropriate.
Check inventory levels and insure that the kitchen is properly stocked.
Break down larger cuts of meat and seafood.
Review prepared menu items to ensure proper cooking, presentation and authentic flavors.
Receive inquiries and orders directly from customers and fulfill as requested.
Monitor prepared foods for compliance with HACCP, including taking and recording food temperatures before the food leaves the production area.
Oversee and participate in cleaning and sanitizing of all areas of the kitchen.
Ensure foods and menu items remaining after meal preparation and service are properly wrapped, dated, labeled and stored before the close of the shift.
Maintain records of foods produced, foods wasted, and any recipe adjustments.
Identify any safety issues or equipment malfunctions and report them to the Unit Manager.
Perform related duties as requested.
POSITION DIMENSIONS
There are 9-month or 11.5-month cyclic positions available. These positions are located at various UW Dining venues. Schedules may be changed with two weeks' notice.
Though hired into a specific working title or location, all employees of Housing & Food Services are expected to support overall operational and customer service needs by: participating in cross-training, providing coverage during staff absences or high business volume, participating in production and/or service of special events, and being willing and able to perform additional, related duties and/or be reassigned to another work unit (as appropriate, within job classification).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Possession of, or eligible to obtain a Washington State Food Worker card within two weeks of employment AND one year of experience preparing and serving food and maintaining clean work area.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Performs daily, weekly, and monthly deep cleaning of facility, service areas, and all kitchen equipment such as counters, tables, ovens, refrigerators, freezers, mixers, transient hot carts, mobile carts, and rolling racks.
Successfully complete classes required for the position and attend meetings, and/or workshops related to the position.
As needed, provides assistance to maintain meal count of students, staff, and visitors.
Employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands; reach with hands and arms.
As instructed, performs assigned duties with some independence.
Perform any other duties related to the food services program as required.

Knowledge of methods of preparing and serving a variety of foods from fresh, canned, dry or frozen.
Knowledge of cleaning and sanitation methods used in a food service environment.
Knowledge of food storage methods.
Minimum Requirements:
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must possess a current Food Handler's Card.
Must possess a current First Aid/CPR Card.
Required to pass pre-employment drug test.
Required to pass pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
Must have no history of child abuse and neglect.
Must have no history of drug and alcohol abuse.
Must provide a copy of a recent medical/physical examination document.
Minimum of two years successful work experience as a cook or related education in field may substitute.
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving Permit.

Preferred Requirements:
Certificate or degree in Culinary Arts course of study from an institute of higher education.
