Dr. Ellner is the President and CEO of Centura Health Physician Group, a 600 provider, employed multi-specialty group headquartered in Englewood, Colorado. Centura Health is a 17 hospital health system focused on connecting Colorado and western Kansas to affordable, world-class care with $1.3 billion in annual revenues. Dr. Ellner has completed a Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship with the American Hospital Association (AHA) and National Patient Safety Foundation. He is a Senior Fellow with the Health Research Educational Trust and a member of the AHA Committee on Clinical Leadership. His work focuses on communication and culture change in the healthcare workplace to improve patient outcomes. He was Chairman and founding member of the Connecticut Surgical Quality Collaborative, a statewide, data sharing framework for all Connecticut hospitals to learn from one another using best practices. As an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Dr. Ellner created a four-year patient safety curriculum for medical students and a yearlong "Leading Surgical Quality" curriculum for the surgical residents. He has written numerous peer-review articles on the subject of patient safety and is considered to be one of the "50 Leading Experts" on the subject by Becker’s Hospital Review. Dr. Ellner holds a Master’s Degree in Health Care Management from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and has written case studies on surgical quality for the school to use as part of their curriculum. Dr. Ellner has appeared live on the Today Show, Larry King Live, NBC CT 30, NPR and has had articles in the CT Mirror, the Hartford Courant, the Wall Street Journal, Hartford Magazine, Hartford Business Journal, the HFMA e-Bulletin, Outpatient Surgery Magazine, Becker's Clinical Review, the American College of Surgeons Bulletin and the AHA Hospital and Health Networks Online Magazine for patient safety and health care quality improvement.

An Evansville native, Shawn has served Deaconess for nearly 30 years, beginning his tenure as an industrial engineering summer intern. He held many different and varied management roles throughout his career, moving to the chief operating officer position in 2005. The Board unanimously selected him to succeed Linda White as the CEO of Deaconess Health System based on his intimate knowledge of the organization, his business acumen, ability to forge relationships with physicians, and his involvement in the community and non-profit organizations.

As president and chief executive officer, Bill Gassen is leading efforts to tackle some of medicine’s most challenging issues, including the state of global health, breast cancer, pediatric rare diseases and type 1 diabetes. At the same time, the organization is also advancing health care through its innovative integration of genomics into primary care, the creation of an expansive biobank and the exploration of the healing powers of immunotherapy and adipose stem cells. Gassen began his career at Sanford Health in 2012 as corporate counsel and transitioned to the human resources department two years later as vice president of human resource integration and eventually became the chief human resources officer. In 2019, he was promoted to chief administrative officer with oversight of human resources, technology solutions, legal, facilities, business development and the Sanford Sports Complex. Prior to joining Sanford Health, Gassen spent several years in private legal practice. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a law degree, both from the University of South Dakota. Gassen and his wife, Jill, have five children.

His writings have been published in various magazines, trade journals, and medical journals, including the Physician Executive Journal, Healthcare Executive, Modern Healthcare, Group Practice Journal, New England Journal of Medicine, and Journal of Healthcare Management (Best Article Award). Served on the Board of Directors of professional associations, civic organizations, and businesses. He currently serves as President & CEO of Alyeska International Inc., as well as other organizations.
