Ricky Shelton, Mayor of the City of Cookeville and Chief Strategy Officer at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, has extensive experience in the public service arena; serving 2 terms as a Cookeville City Councilman (2002-2010) before being elected Mayor in 2014. He was reelected as Mayor August 2018 with the largest vote total ever in a City election. Shelton has served on numerous boards in his capacity as Mayor, including the Upper Cumberland Development District, Vice Chairman Upper Cumberland Regional Airport Authority, Putnam County 911 Board, as well as the Joint Economic and Community Development Board. In 2020, he was appointed by TN Governor Bill Lee to the TN Homeland Security Council.He is committed to leadership, which was never more evident, than when he led Cookeville through the devastating 2020 tornado. During the City’s worst ever natural disaster, he helped lead both the response, as well as, the recovery. He also, organized and spearheaded the official tornado relief fund raising over $2.3 million…100% of which was given to the 473 families. One of his main goals has been Economic Development, including economic growth, job creation and infrastructure. Since taking office in August 2014, over 4500 new jobs have been created and $350 million in Capital Investment have been announced for Cookeville resulting in a record low unemployment rate in Putnam County. Community and quality of life are both priorities to Ricky Shelton and his family. He is passionate about Cookeville and the many things that contribute to quality of life for residents, such as public safety, education, parks, healthcare, and historical efforts. Fulfilling a campaign promise from 2014, Mayor Shelton began and organized two new community festivals that have quickly become the premier events in Cookeville. Red White & BOOM Fourth of July Celebration, in its 7th year, featuring the 2nd largest fireworks show in TN and Christmas in the Park featuring our awesome community Christmas tree both of which have been enjoyed by thousands of people!Mayor Shelton, a Cookeville native and lifelong resident, attended Cookeville High School and graduated from Tennessee Technological University in 1985 with a degree in Business/Marketing. Shelton knows the value of small business from his 22 years of operating Shelton’s Jewelry. Since 2007, he worked as a Diabetes Sales Specialist with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals throughout Middle and East Tennessee. In January 2021, Shelton joined the Senior leadership team at Cookeville Regional Medical Center as Chief Strategy Officer.
