The PCT Apprenticeship Program is structured around a combination of classroom training and preceptorship on a unit. It is designed to train eager and compassionate candidates who are interested in a career in the Nursing field. The Patient Care Technician (PCT) Apprenticeship Program Educator assesses prior student knowledge, delivers didactic education using active learning and possibly blended learning methodologies, instructs in skills, and validates knowledge and competency. The PCT Apprenticeship Program Educator is responsible for teaching PCT apprentice classes and PCT preceptor classes. Maintains the standardization and integrity of the apprentice and preceptor education. Responsible for scheduling, coordination with Human Resources, and coordination with students and their managers as to class schedules, ensures placement of apprentice with a qualified preceptor(s). Evaluates the learning experience and curriculum to determine areas for improvement in content, delivery, or educational environment. Collect and assess evaluative data to inform possible program changes. Responsible to maintain and acquire necessary physical resources used in the training process in collaboration with the Manager of the PCT Apprenticeship Program. Responsibilities 1. Creates, monitors, delivers, assesses, and evaluates PCT Apprentice and PCT Preceptor education. Ensures education and competencies are appropriate and meeting regulatory requirements and HMH needs. Coordinates with Nursing Leadership, Clinical Nurse Education Specialists. And program leadership to ensure skill needs are met and new needed skills/competencies are taught and validated. 2. Remediates unsuccessful candidates/students as appropriate, continually focusing on the safe delivery of appropriate patient care. 3. Ensures physical resources are available and appropriate for education/training. 4. Adheres to standardized curriculum to ensure the integrity of the education/training and integrity of the program. 5. Coordinates with candidates/students, leadership, and human resources to ensure the class schedules are publicized, appropriate, and consistent with program goals. Works with the Manager of PCT Apprenticeship Program as a liaison between students, individual campus site point persons, Nursing Professional Development, and Nursing/Hospital Leadership. 6. Collects, analyzes and reports on relevant data and metrics as needed and/or requested. Develops, recommends and/or implements actions or process improvements as appropriate. 7. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. 8. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior. Qualifications Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: * BSN. * Minimum of two years' nursing experience in acute care setting. * Maintains clinical competencies in area of specialty and demonstrates expertise in knowledge of scope of practice of Nursing Support Staff. * Prior experience in teaching. Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: * Experience developing, implementing, delivering, and evaluating educational/training programs. Prior experience in teaching Nursing support staff. * Master's degree in Nursing or Nursing Education. Licenses and Certifications Required: * NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License. Draws intravenous or capillary blood from newborn through geriatric aged patients using proper aseptic collection techniques, assure appropriate labeling and processing of specimens to expedite throughput of patients Performs venipuncture for laboratory tests Demonstrates a reliable and dependable ability to follow through with designated responsibilities in the collecting, labeling, and transporting of specimens to the proper area at the appropriate time: always correctly labels type of specimen collected, including patients name and room number. Performs EKG for patients as directed. Assures the presence, functionality and cleanliness of all necessary equipment. Checks and maintains code cart, O2, and other emergency medical equipment as directed. Applies bandages, slings, compression boots and hypothermia blankets according to standard as directed by RN. Assists in the transport of patients to departments or units upon request. Assists with preparation as necessary assuring the patient is assisted with meals/ or fed as needed. Checks inventory of assigned area and restocks as directed. Ensures the room environment is prepared for admission. Provides direct hygiene and comfort care to patients including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, and bed making. Assists the patients with dressing/undressing and placing patient belongings in the appropriate bag labeled with completed property checklist. Monitors the return of clothing to family of patient. Performs and documents glucose finger sticks and collects other specimens as directed. Provides post mortem care Obtains and documents patient weights and observes and documents patient's intake and output. Provides a safe patient environment by answering call lights promptly, communicating with the RN immediately for any change in the patient's condition. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs not limited to (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.) Other duties and/or projects as assigned. Short Description The Patient Care Technician provides patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Key responsibilities include observing and reporting patient condition changes, assisting with daily living activities (such as meals and bathing), recording vital signs, measuring fluid intake/output, collecting specimens, and transporting patients within the hospital. They also perform one-on-one monitoring with documentation, demonstrate computer skills, follow physician orders, and use the internal paging and patient call systems.
