John ended his 2002 three minute acceptance speech with the following poetry from Charles Hamilton Sorley:

2003 - Paula Radcliffe, U.K., breaks her own marathon world record by almost 2 minutes, running 2:15.25 in London.

2015

In 2015 alone, the United States athletic footwear industry generated $17.2 billion.

A five-time marathoner (and new triathlete), she crossed the finish line of the 2015 New York City Marathon in 4:14:00, just six days after running the Dublin Marathon in 3:53:41.

2017

Well, consider that, according to Statistica, close to a whopping sixty million people participated in some variation of the sport in 2017 – and that’s just in the United States alone.

2018 - Eliud Kipchoge breaks the world record in the men’s marathon in Berlin.

2019

There are 715 marathons scheduled all around the United States in 2019.
