As part of the global controls team, you will work with highly motivated experts and innovators in the data center industry. You will be responsible for troubleshooting, project management, and maintaining the building management system (BMS) and electrical power monitoring system (EPMS). Using Amazon leadership principles, you will develop new processes and standards while innovating in the controls space.
AWS Data centers have multiple components such as generators, uninterruptable power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, automatic/static transfer switches, chillers [air-cooled and water-cooled], pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, CRAHs, air economizers, etc. All these components have local control systems that interact with each other via open and/or proprietary communications protocols. The BMS is the primary method of control of all mechanical systems within a data center. The EPMS is the primary method of monitoring all electrical systems within a data center.
Key job responsibilities
As a Data Center Controls Engineer you will:
• Troubleshoot and perform Root Cause Analysis or Corrective Action for BMS and EPMS related issues in AWS data centers.
• Train and assist internal customers and stakeholders with the creation, design, configuration, validation, installation, commissioning and operation of BMS and EPMS systems.
• Provide technical assistance and support to operations during life cycle of the data center.
• Review results and action items from the quarterly maintenances for BMS and EPMS and take actions to get them resolved.
• Develop BMS & EPMS projects scope of work, schedule, budget, and level of efforts (LOE) to projects requested by customers and stakeholders.
• Manage scope, schedule, finance and execution of BMS and EPMS improvement projects in AWS data centers.
• Assist in procurement related activities including request for quotation/proposals, responding to request for information, review of vendors proposal and issuance of purchase orders.
• Participate in AWS global on-call schedule to provide immediate BMS and EPMS technical support to in-service data centers.
• Attend project related meetings, coordinate with project leaders and regularly report status to Controls and stakeholders management.
• Support Controls projects related commissioning activities in the data centers.
• Review, implement, troubleshoot and iterate on the controls sequence of operation (SOO) and provide necessary feedback to the design team.
• Develop and modify controls logic programming and graphical user interfaces.
• Manage multiple stakeholder deliverables, requirements and navigate challenging situations.
• Financially manage BMS and EPMS service contracts.
• Frequently visit (locally) assigned in-operation data centers to troubleshoot, meet customers, supervise vendor's work to ensure compliance with the scope, design, SOO and applicable local codes.

Focus

Deployment Playbook Development: Build the repeatable deployment process that scales from from double digit Megawatt to Gigawatt deployments. Under general direction, the Lead Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining a secure and high-performance enterprise network infrastructure. The Lead Network Engineer leads strategic network initiatives, mentors junior engineers and contingent workers, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure the seamless operation of business-critical systems.
The technical lead is responsible for network architecture, performance optimization, compliance, and security enforcement across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. This role works with a wide range of technologies, including routers, switches, firewalls, SD-WAN, wireless, and cloud networking solutions, to enhance network reliability, scalability, and security.
In addition to designing and managing the network, this role drives strategic planning, proactive performance monitoring, and incident resolution to minimize downtime and ensure business continuity. The Lead Network Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring regulatory compliance (SOC, HITRUST). Collaborates with vendors and stakeholders, evaluates emerging technologies, optimizes costs, and strengthens disaster recovery capabilities to support the organization's long-term networking strategy.

Responsibilities
Leads the design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, SD-WAN, VPN, and cloud networking to ensure high performance and scalability
Deploys, configures, and manages enterprise networking solutions, including Cisco and Meraki, ensuring reliable and secure connectivity
Administers and secures network firewalls, intrusion prevention systems (IPS/IDS), and access control policies to mitigate threats and protect sensitive data
Implements network segmentation, Zero Trust security principles, and enforce compliance standards such as SOC, HITRUST, HIPAA, and NIST to align with industry regulations

Key Responsibilities
Work directly with customers through tickets to onboard BYO-BGP customers, troubleshoot performance issues related to availability, reachability, latency, and jitter as well as cloud native VPC networks.
Research network events to identify potentially contributing technical debt, architecture issues, or process problems and take ownership of driving end to end improvements across the platforms.
Compose, review and test procedure documentation which provides for scheduled maintenance that eliminates customer impact and improves the overall customer experience.
Work with internal teams to ensure that network issues including automation are resolved quickly.
Troubleshoot issues to identify issues at any layer of the OSI Model.
Qualifications
Experience with network operations troubleshooting, planning and deployment of network changes.
A minimum of 1-2 years of experience with BGP based networks, including comprehensive experience with Internet scale routing tables, IRR's, RIR's, RPKI, routing policies, peering policies and architectures.
Understanding of technologies and protocols such as VxLAN, EVPN.
Basic Linux administration experience (Debian is preferred), including understanding of Linux Kernel routes, iptables, nftables, ebtables, ipset, and network routing suites such as FRR and Bird (preferred).
Understanding of networking in the cloud including VPC's, NFV, Direct Connect, and IPsec.
Skilled with documenting the troubleshooting processes for repetitive tasks.
Proactive approach to detecting network issues before they become a larger problem.
Knowledge of building scripts/tools to automate repeatable network changes and to gather network health data is preferred.
Experience opening and following up tickets with vendors and transit providers.
Scripting in Python and knowledge of Ansible playbooks is a plus.
Understanding of 1 or more vendors and operating systems such as Juniper, Cisco, Brocade, Cumulus, and SONiC.
Certifications such as CCNA, JNCIA are highly preferred.
