Cornell University company history timeline

1865

Cornell University was founded on April 27, 1865; the New York State (NYS) legislature authorized the university as the state's land grant institution.

1870

Cornell was the first American university to be divided into colleges offering different degrees, and it was among the first Eastern universities to admit women (1870).

1883

Cornell developed as a technologically innovative institution, applying its research to its own campus and to outreach efforts. For example, in 1883, it was one of the first university campuses to use electricity from a water-powered dynamo to light the grounds.

1894

Since 1894, Cornell has included colleges that are state funded and fulfill statutory requirements; it has also administered research and extension activities that have been jointly funded by state and federal matching programs.

1936

1936 by William Austen in his honor) Awarded for the best essay by a graduate or undergraduate student in the fields of American History, literature, or folklore.

1963

As a young man, he began reading about history and politics, and in 1963 he traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in a civil rights march.

1965

Wolfowitz’s father, a Polish immigrant whose family died in the Holocaust, taught mathematics at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where Paul earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1965.

1972

Wolfowitz later studied political science at the University of Chicago (Ph.D., 1972), where one of his professors was Leo Strauss, a leading figure in neoconservatism.

2000

Since 2000, Cornell has been expanding its international programs.

2001

In 2001 Wolfowitz returned to politics, becoming deputy secretary of defense under Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

2002

A graduate student group, At What Cost?, formed at Cornell in August 2002 to oppose a graduate student unionization drive run by an organization called CASE/UAW that was affiliated with the United Auto Workers.

2004

In 2004, the university opened the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.

2005

In 2005 Wolfowitz left the Bush administration to become president of the World Bank.

2007

Unable to quell the furor, Wolfowitz announced his resignation, effective June 30, 2007.

For the graduating class of 2022 and beyond: Four of the nine courses must be taken from one each of the following five categories: Asian, North America, European, Global South (Africa/Caribbean/Latin American and Middle East), and Transregional (Transregional, Comparative, and Methodological).
