1997

In January 1997, Sikorsky and Boeing won a $1.7 billion contract to continue developing their RAH-66 Comanche armed reconnaissance helicopter.

United began flying dedicated cargo aircraft again in 1997 after a 13-year lapse.

During 1997 United News acquired HTV, a Welsh independent television broadcaster; Telecom Library, a magazine publisher and trade show organizer in the United States; and Lemos Britto, a Brazilian trade show organizer.

1999

In January 1999, UAL increased its flight frequencies to match moves by US Airways.

Lear Corporation bought the business for $2.3 billion in May 1999.

James E. Goodwin followed Greenwald as chairman and CEO in July 1999.

2000

The company bought Cade Industries, a Michigan aerospace supplier, in February 2000.

In November 2000 the Express Newspapers unit was sold to the Northern & Shell Group for £125 million.

In the end, however, United News & Media elected to sell off its three ITV licenses and related assets to Granada for £1.75 billion, in a deal completed in December 2000.

The company's transformation into a focused business publisher and provider of business services reached its culmination in 2000, with the process being launched in the final months of the preceding year.

UBM emerged from the whirlwind of activities in 2000 as a major player in professional media, news distribution, and market research.

2002

As UBM awaited a turnaround in the advertising market that might mark a return to profitability, Hampel retired as chairman in October 2002, with longtime board member Geoff Unwin assuming his position.

The operating environment continued to be a rough one in 2002, leading the company to announce the elimination of a further 500 positions, with large reductions at CMP Media and PR Newswire.

2006

The firm emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2006.

2010

Hobby Lobby Stores, the Supreme Court has to choose whether to extend the logic of 2010’s Citizens United to allow a corpor­a­tion to make a reli­gious objec­tion to a gener­ally applic­able law.

The following year United partnered with Continental Airlines to expand its flight options, and in 2010 it merged with Continental.

2011

However, the two airlines continued to operate separately—as subsidiaries of the newly created United Continental Holdings—while waiting for the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a single operating license, which was granted in late 2011.
