We are seeking a Security Officer to help us maintain and improve our day to day Security related responsibilities. As an APL Security Officer, you will...
Verify the identification of employees and visitors by badge inspection and/or using the Security personnel databases, as well as provide control of all incoming and outgoing property.
Patrol and inspect interior facilities to ensure that proper security protocols are being followed.
Operate APL vehicles to patrol outside areas and ensure that proper security procedures are being followed, including enforcing all parking regulations.
Write security-related reports and complete incident forms and present to security leadership staff.
Perform other miscellaneous tasks to include use of fire extinguishers lifting heavy objects (e.g., classified waste bags) and employment of defense tactics.
Be assigned to work one of three 24/7 shifts as specified by the hiring manager: 7AM to 3PM, 3PM to 11PM, or 11PM to 7AM.
Qualifications

Have a High School diploma or equivalent plus one year of security-related work experience (e.g. military, police, corrections), or a minimum of sixty (60) college credits in a relevant field (e.g. Criminal Justice, Psychology, Cybersecurity, etc.) from an accredited institution.
Possess good interpersonal skills, as well as a professional demeanor and appearance.
Are able to speak and write English to the level required to perform job tasks including interaction with a variety of people and preparation of written reports.
Possess basic computer knowledge to include the skills to use a security database and email.
Have a valid state-of-residence driver's license in good standing.
Are willing and able to occasionally work mandatory overtime.
Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
Are able to obtain satisfactory results from a pre-employment physical exam prior to your start date.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. JOB SUMMARY:

General Job Information This position is located in the D.C. Department of Corrections (DOC), Central Detention Facility (DC Jail) and Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF). As an entry level CorrectionalOfficer, incumbent serves in a developmental capacity, under the overall supervision of a Supervisory CorrectionalOfficer and a Training Coordinator. Incumbent undergoes an intensive training program, which consists of formal classroom instruction, demonstrations, selected reading in the correctional field, and on-the-job training (OJT) under close supervision.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CorrectionalOfficers enforce the regulations governing the operation of the facility, serving as both a supervisor and counselor of inmates. During emergencies or other periods of heavy workload or limited staff, may be required to work long and irregular hours, unusual shifts, Sundays, holidays and unexpected overtime. Duties include, but are not limited to the following under close supervision. As training progresses the supervision becomes more intermittent.
Enforces rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct to ensure judicial sanctions are carried out and inmates remain in custody. Provides custody and security of inmates including observing actions of inmates. Conduct pat and strip searches of offenders. Restraining and securing sometimes assaultive inmates; escorts/transports offenders by walking and/or vehicles. Submit disciplinary reports on inmate violations of rules and regulations, and submit reports on illegal or questionable occurrences. Conducts inventory of individual inmate property and documents. Assist in the supervision of inmates in living quarters, visiting hall, during recreational activities, while in transit and during sleeping hours. Count inmates at designated and random times as instructed. Maintains accountability of inmates assigned to work detail. Respond to emergency situations such as escape, suicide, riot and other disturbance, in accordance with Department policies, procedures, rules, regulations and post orders.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
This position requires Specialized Experience that have equipped the applicants with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION

General Medical Requirements: As determined by OPM the duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of fingers, wrist, elbows, shoulders, hips and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs and feet must function sufficiently in order for applicants to perform the duties satisfactorily.

* Recruitment Incentive: Applicants may be eligible for a $40,000 recruitment incentive in accordance with regulatory requirements. The first installment of $15,000 will be paid following successful completion of Secret Service Criminal Investigator training. A second installment of $10,000 will be paid following one year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. The final installment of $15,000 will be paid after a third year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. Provision of these payments require the execution of a three-year Continued Service Agreement (CSA) with the agency. Newly hired employees who resign from the USSS prior to the expiration of the CSA will be required to repay the recruitment incentive. (NOTE: Eligibility is limited to "Newly appointed" Federal employees as defined by 5 CFR 575.102).
Applicants selected for this position will be required to sign a CSA before being assigned to an initial training class. The CSA will commit the applicant to a specified period of employment with the Secret Service upon the successful completion of training.
