About the Role

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Prior training or experience in corrections is desirable, but not required. Must have excellent verbal communication skills, ability to hear normal range of radio and speech, and ability to visually observe persons and conditions. Must have ability to work independently, maintain a calm and professional manner at all times, and have the ability to physically restrain inmates if necessary. Must be able to work rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
Must pass a tuberculosis screening and receive a certificate in medication passing and Certificates of Training in CPR, First Aid, and AED within 6 months of hire.
When advertising for vacancies, Aitkin County will state whether a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ) exists. For example, a BFOQ may exist related to gender for CorrectionalOfficers to comply with DOC staffing regulations.

(The STS Crew cuts numerous cords of firewood per year for Long Lake Conservation Center, a county-owned conservation and environmental education center.)

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, observes incarcerated individual behavior/interaction with staff, other incarcerated individuals, and visitors; communicates and documents observations to ensure effective security and consistent application of incarcerated individual change principles.

Patrols facilities and makes security checks; conducts rounds and incarcerated individual counts; inspects all areas of the institution and grounds for safety/security deficiencies.
Conducts searches of incarcerated individuals, vehicles, packages, equipment, incarcerated individuals' cells and property for contraband items. With a balanced approach, instructs incarcerated individuals in rules, policy, procedure, expectations, and assists incarcerated individuals in the development of attitudes and skills necessary for successful adaptation to life within an institution and a pro-social lifestyle.
Escorts incarcerated individuals, visitors, and staff inside/outside of the institution and verifies possession of appropriate passes or legal documents. Interacts with the general public, visitors, and victims in person or via phone.

Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions. Core Duties of All Correctional Deputy Staff:
1. Represents the Sheriff's Office in a positive, professional manner.
2. Builds and maintains positive working relationships.
3. Maintains standards of dress in accordance with policy and procedure.
4. Understands and complies with policy and procedure to include Sheriff's Office memorandums, directives and notices.
5. Maintains officer safety and situational awareness.

9. Patrol facility and make rounds counting and recording prisoners coming into or out of the Dakota County Jail.
10. Book in prisoners following established procedures to include, initial medical assessment, the taking of fingerprints, photographs, and collecting medical information and personal histories of new inmates.
11. Provide security for medical staff as they administer medication, including narcotics, conduct diabetic checks (blood sugar and insulin), and address other medical issues and treatment of inmates according to physician's orders and/or dietary restrictions.
12. Respond to and assesses emergency situations such as fights, suicide attempts, threats to staff, fire alarms, escape attempts, contraband recovery, and medical situations by applying first aid, enforcing rules, restraining inmates, responding to calls for assistance, or by notifying proper authorities in an attempt to restore order and security.
13. Applies objectively reasonable and necessary amount of force in accordance with Sheriff's Office policy.
14. Respond to calls for assistance throughout the jail and document all incidents and facts by preparing reports on jail problems and discipline.
15. Supervise, coordinate, escort and communicate effectively with inmates in jail housing units. Process, coordinate, and disseminate all needs including, but not limited to, medical issues, courts, programs, visitation, food, clothing, inmate requests and shelter.
16. Conducts searches of inmates (pat or visual strip searches), living areas, cells and visitors for contraband in accordance with jail policy and procedures.
17. Process inmate funds according to standard operating procedures.
18. Process inmate releases to include releasing and returning inmate personal property upon their release from the Dakota County Jail and the processing of bail/bonds.
19. May supervise inmate recreational and visiting periods as well as inmate housekeeping responsibilities within the housing units and inmate worker housekeeping activities throughout the facility such as kitchen and laundry duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a secure jail, supervising inmates incarcerated for criminal activities ranging from misdemeanor to felony offenses. Lifting and/or carrying 10 to 50 pounds daily, and occasionally pushing/pulling/lifting over 100 pounds. Standing or walking 8 to 12 hours daily. Climbing, running and kneeling frequently in response to code calls and inmate disturbances. Exposure to disagreeable odors (e.g., body odors, dirty clothing, human feces), body fluids, hazardous chemicals, communicable diseases (e.g., T.B., hepatitis, AIDS), mentally unstable individuals and individuals under the influence of controlled substances. This work environment also includes the need to distinguish between the colors of blue, khaki, red, green, orange, yellow, white and pink to maintain inmate security. Equipment used may include, but is not limited to, computer, printer, telephone, calculator, copier, 2-way radios, still camera, body-worn camera, intercom, chemical agents, handcuffs, restraint chair, restraints, Alco Sensor, metal detector, control panel, fire and emergency panel, jail policy and procedure manual, Minnesota Rule 2911, mugshot, fingerprint machine, inmate accounting system, medical cart, and blood sugar test kit. The Department of Public Safety at Iowa State University is seeking candidates for non-certified officers to join our team.
This is a 24 hour operation, 365 days a year. Officers will be expected to work holidays that fall within their regular work schedule as well as during home football games and other major events that occur on campus. Expected to report for duty when major natural disasters or other emergency situation affecting the campus occur.
Permanent, 12 Months, Full Time, 40 hours/week, Rotating Schedule, Shift assignment to be determined after completion of training program. During training will rotate through all shifts. Days off are also on a rotating schedule.
In accordance with the general requirements for law enforcement officers under Iowa Admin. Code 501-2.1, the applicant selected for this position, both uncertified and certified, must be a U.S. citizen.
Must have and maintain a valid U.S. state driver's license and the ability to be authorized to drive University vehicles.
Non-Certified:
This is an entry level police officer position. The officer will attend and must successfully complete the Iowa Law Enforcement Basic Level I or Level II Academy to become certified as a peace officer in the state of Iowa. Upon successful completion of the academy, the officer will return to the ISU campus and be placed under the direct supervision of a police training officer. During this period, the officer will perform all the duties of a law enforcement officer, including patrolling the university campus and outlying areas; enforcing local, state, and federal laws as well as campus rules and regulations; responding to calls for service; initiating police reports; performing follow-up investigations as needed; directing traffic, and other duties as assigned.

Correction officer job in Preston, MN
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for the supervision and well-being of all inmates in the Fillmore County Jail.
Complete all booking and release procedures on incoming and outgoing persons as set forth in policy/procedure manual.
Maintain all security regulations in the jail.
Periodically inspect cells for well checks, vandalism, and other problems.
Interpret rules and regulations for inmates and help them with any problems that may arise.
Participate with jail administrator, probation officer, CD counselor and volunteers in program planning.
Manage and maintain inmate records in a variety of computer programs.
Keep logs of all inmate activity as required by policy/procedure.
Transport prisoners to and from various facilities and to court, medical appointments, etc.
Submit predatory offender packets for required individuals either incarcerated or from the public.
Transport and distribute meals to prisoners.
Perform some facility maintenance such as plumbing issues, locks, and lights.
Comply with PREA standards.
Assist inmates experiencing medical or mental health distress. Distribute medications.
Intervene in emergency situations such as fights, suicide attempts and medical emergencies.
Assist dispatch in emergency situations, when jail staffing allows and does not reduce jail staff below staffing requirements.
Operate “Master Control” security management system to open and close secure jail doors, turn lights on and off, and monitor security cameras throughout the jail.
Assist inmates experiencing medical or mental health distress. Distribute medications.
Perform medical assessments on newly admitted inmates which include medical history, current health concerns and current medications.
Consult with on-all contracted medical staff to address medical issues.
Make decisions when contracted medical staff is not available and waiting for call back.
Review all medications. Verify correct medication.
Fill out MARS (Medication Administration Records) with medication information. Contact the pharmacy to verify and renew prescriptions.
Relay medication problems to medical staff.
Follow MARS and distribute medications daily. Make sure medications are taken properly and not checked or other methods of manipulation.
Perform Mental Health assessments.
Make referrals to mental health staff for inmates that fail assessments.
Intervene in emergency situations such as fights, suicide attempts and medical emergencies.
Provide first aid, CPR and other lifesaving skills to inmates that attempt suicide or have medical emergencies until first responders arrive.
Supervise suicidal, mentally ill and inmates with behavioral issues and provide recommendations to counselors, probation officers, treatment providers, mental health, and medical staff.
Perform urine analysis tests on inmates and probation clients.
Perform civil prints to the public.
While these are the primary focus of the position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as part of their role with the County.
Position Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
Ability to use computer software and applications.
Knowledge of County Jail regulations and general aptitude for dealing with prisoners.
Knowledge of first aid and skilled in its application.
Knowledge of the custodial care and rights of prisoners.
Ability to utilize de-escalation techniques to reduce the intensity of a conflict or potentially volatile situation, often through communication strategies and behavioral techniques, with the goal of calming individuals and preventing escalation.
Obtain training and proficiency in skills needed to assist dispatch in emergencies.
Obtain a standard of training that will allow jailers to assist dispatch in emergencies. This training will involve but not be limited to, paging ambulance and fire, communicating on the radio and answering 911 calls.
Obtain training and maintain proficiency in operating the “Master Control” security management system.
Ability to handle critical situations in a calm manner.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED and must be 18 years of age.
Licenses/Certifications
Current Minnesota Driver's License is required. Within six months of hire the following training/certifications are required: Taser, Use of Force, and First Aid/CPR.
