This is both the entry level and the first safety class within the Police Officer series. Incumbents perform all duties required to effectively respond to and resolve situations encountered. Police Officer (Entry) may be assigned, depending on rotational assignments, to patrol, traffic, detective, crime prevention or other police-related functions.

Introduction The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office is seeking highly motivated individuals who will play a critical role in the daily function and operations of the Custody Division. The CorrectionalOfficer Trainee is responsible for learning to follow clearly established procedures in receiving prisoners, maintaining discipline and preventing escapes. Work is initially performed under close supervision in a training capacity and as experience, knowledge and skill are gained, supervision becomes more general. The ideal candidate must be able to supervise inmates, interpret rules and regulations, remain alert at all times and react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Pre-Employment Physical, Drug Screen and Background: Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination, a pre-employment drug screen and a background investigation as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible candidate has passed the drug screen, physical and successfully completed the background process. The County pays for the initial drug screen and physical.

Candidates may provide a BSCC Selection Examination T-Score for entry level Adult Corrections or Juvenile CorrectionsOfficer from other agencies in lieu of taking the written examination. A T-Score of 45 or higher is qualifying with San Joaquin County.
T-Scores must be on official agency letterhead in PDF format and have been within the last 12 months. You may attach your T-score letters to your application or e-mail them to *****************. Please note, San Joaquin County WILL NOT waive the physical agility exam in lieu of another physical agility exam from another law enforcement agencies and/or basic training academies.
If you retest within 30 days either with the same or a different department/agency, your test results will be invalidated. you must wait at least 30 calendar days prior to retaking the test (e.g., you will be eligible to retest on the 31st day after you have taken your last BSCC exam.)

Hiring Incentive Program:
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office is offering a hiring incentive in the amount of $10,000. The department will award the cash incentive to any person who is hired for any of the following job classifications; within the timeframes this program is active and so approved by the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors:
* Deputy Sheriff Trainee/AC/I/II
* CorrectionalOfficer Trainee/CorrectionalOfficer
* Communications Dispatcher I/II/III
Additionally, a moving stipend reimbursement is available for those new hires within the qualified classifications. A qualified hire may receive up to $2,000 for any cost directly associated with relocating their primary residence as a result of gaining employment with this office.
The following incentives may also be available for eligible new hires, subject to approval by Human Resources:
* Vacation Accrual Rate: San Joaquin County vacation accrual rate consistent with the candidate's total years of public service.
* Sick Leave: Candidates leaving other employment may receive credit for actual non-reimbursable sick leave hours (up to 160 hours) from their last agency. Hours shall be subject to San Joaquin County's minimum sick leave cash out provisions.

A Sheriff's Correctional Deputy Cadet enters training to join the ranks of Sheriff's Correctional Deputies who, under supervision, maintain order and security of inmates within a detention facility, transport from the correctional facilities to and from court, medical facilities, and other locations within and outside the County, supervise a crew of inmates in work projects throughout the County, and assist in the correction of antisocial attitudes and behavior. After passing the exam and screening processes, candidates are eligible to be hired as a Sheriff's Correctional Deputy and attend an Adult Correctional Academy training program as trainee.
Agility Examination: Prior to appointment as a cadet, each candidate must pass an agility test as part of the examination process. The agility test consists of three timed events: 99-yard obstacle course, drag a 165-lb bag for 32 feet, and a 500-yard run.
When hired, Sheriff's Correctional Deputy Cadets enter a 13-week Adult Correctional Academy training program. Benefits include medical, dental, and life insurance programs. Your status as trainee pursuant to the Fair Labor Standard Act does not entitle you to overtime or holiday pay while attending the Academy.
After Academy graduation, Cadets are eligible to be sworn in as a regular Sheriff's Correctional Deputy at the start of the following pay period, and be considered probationary employees of the Sheriff's Office.
A 5% salary increase is given for satisfactory job performance six months after appointment as a Sheriff's Correctional Deputy at Step 1.
Newly appointed Sheriff's Correctional Deputies must successfully complete an 18-month probationary period during which they will be required to complete a training program under the supervision of a training officer. The County supplies all safety equipment, as provided by law.
Advanced in-service training is available at the department level and in cooperation with local schools, state and national agencies. Regular County policy on tuition reimbursement applies to Sheriff's Correctional Deputies.
Upon graduation from the Adult Correctional Academy, it is a condition of employment that newly appointed Sheriff's Correctional Deputies must sign a payroll deduction authorization form providing for deduction of union membership dues or an equivalent service fee. A thirty (30) calendar day cancellation period is provided.
Employment Standards
Candidates must possess and clearly specify on their application the following:
Graduation from high school or possession of a General Education Development (G.E.D.) Certificate at the time of application.
Applicants who have passed their 20th birthday may submit an application but cannot be appointed until they have reached their 21st birthday.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License (indicate your expiration month/year) prior to appointment.
Have never been convicted of a felony. Any felony conviction and/or a conviction outside of California that would be considered a felony in this state is disqualifying.
Must possess the legal right to work in the United States
Must be able to take and pass a thorough medical examination. May be disqualified on the basis of established medical standards (current departmental orders). Vision must not be less than 20/100, correctable to 20/20 with normal depth and color perception.
Must be able to successfully demonstrate and maintain physical fitness in order to perform the full scope and functions of the job.
Must be able to pass a complete background investigation including fingerprints and a search of local, state and national files for criminal history.
Sheriff's Correctional Deputies are required to maintain a certificate of CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) and first-aid training.
