JOB SUMMARY
The CorrectionalOfficer is responsible for the overall safety and security of inmates, staff and visitors of Montana State Prison and MontanaCorrectional Enterprises. CorrectionalOfficers help ensure the institution is operated for the safety of the public, as well as the incarceration, treatment and rehabilitation of the inmate population.
* Supervise adult male felons while in the custody of Montana State Prison, on or off property. CorrectionalOfficers are responsible for a wide variety of security duties relative to the safe, orderly and cost effective operation grounds, performing on including, but not limited to, conducting thorough inspections and searches of inmates, buildings and grounds, performing security observation, preparing documentation regarding institutional matters such as incident reports, disciplinary documentation, counts and logs, operating security equipment, recognizing critical behavior, restraining and controlling offenders, and responding to emergencies.
* Enforce and follow rules and regulations including but not limited to written and/or oral directives, post orders, and special instructions in addition to policies and procedures which dictate daily, routine and emergency procedures.
* Serve as a member of the Unit Management Team to oversee all aspects of the basic needs and welfare of adult male felons in the custody of Montana State Prison, on or off property. Participate in case management and classification procedures.
* Provide intervention for adult male felons in the custody of Montana State Prison by facilitating and/or overseeing counseling, medical care, first aid, clothing & laundry, janitorial and housekeeping supplies, transportation of inmates, meals, movement, jobs and other services as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
The knowledge, skills and abilities for this position are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to:
* High school diploma or equivalent and a valid driver's license are required.
* A background check including criminal records check, child/patient/offender abuse registries will be required prior to being hired.

* Must have uncorrected vision of at least 20/100, correctable to 20/20 in each eye. LASIK, ALK, RK, and PRK surgeries are acceptable if required post-surgery visual tests are passed: Lasik (3 months), PRK (6 months), ALK/RK (1 year) waiting periods apply.

General Medical Requirements: As determined by OPM the duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of fingers, wrist, elbows, shoulders, hips and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs and feet must function sufficiently in order for applicants to perform the duties satisfactorily.

* Recruitment Incentive: Applicants may be eligible for a $40,000 recruitment incentive in accordance with regulatory requirements. The first installment of $15,000 will be paid following successful completion of Secret Service Criminal Investigator training. A second installment of $10,000 will be paid following one year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. The final installment of $15,000 will be paid after a third year of service post training and an acceptable performance rating. Provision of these payments require the execution of a three-year Continued Service Agreement (CSA) with the agency. Newly hired employees who resign from the USSS prior to the expiration of the CSA will be required to repay the recruitment incentive. (NOTE: Eligibility is limited to "Newly appointed" Federal employees as defined by 5 CFR 575.102).
Applicants selected for this position will be required to sign a CSA before being assigned to an initial training class. The CSA will commit the applicant to a specified period of employment with the Secret Service upon the successful completion of training.
Applicants will be required to travel to all phases of the hiring process at their own expense. If a final job offer is extended, relocation expenses will not be authorized for first duty location.

The starting hourly wage for an officer is $25.55 (higher for POST certified lateral officers). Following a required amount of time in Patrol, officers have numerous opportunities to move to a different or collateral assignment such as Investigations, Field Training Program, Quick Reaction Force, and the Northwest Montana Regional SWAT Team.
All equipment is provided, to include a take-home vehicle, and all training is paid for. Patrol officers work four ten-hour shifts with three days off per week. Officers are eligible to purchase an annual membership to Polson Bay Golf Course at a reduced rate.
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident with a high school diploma or equivalent. They must be at least 20 years of age. They also must not have been convicted of a crime in which the person could have been imprisoned in a federal or state prison. Applicants must possess or be eligible for a Montana driver's license. They must be of good moral character, as determined through a background investigation.
Applicants cannot have a dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces; nor can they have any convictions for misdemeanors involving false statements, perjury, or domestic violence. Other potential disqualifiers include past drug use, inappropriate social media activity, problematic driving or work history, criminal associations, and inappropriate tattoos.
The top qualified applicants will be invited to written and physical testing. The written exam consists of four separately timed sections, with no prior law enforcement knowledge required. Applicants who have taken the exam within six months prior to the application close date and whose scores were proctored by a Montana Law Enforcement Agency can submit those scores instead of retaking the exam. Applicants must complete the Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT) which consists of a push/pull activity, dummy drag, and obstacle course within 6:30 minutes. Pass a background investigation in accordance with Ravalli County Sheriffs Office procedure.
Must pass a physical examination by a physician selected/paid for by the Ravalli County Sheriffs Office.
Complete a personnel evaluation profile (PEP).
Successfully completing pre-employment drug testing.
Successfully complete an interview panel process conducted by the Ravalli County Sheriffs Office to demonstrate the possession of communication skills, temperament, motivation, and other characteristics necessary to the accomplishment of the duties and functions of a CorrectionsOfficer.
Successfully complete a one-year probation period, which includes passing the applicable divisional training program.
