How You Will Make an Impact
Perform inmate head counts, cell checks, and searches. Monitor, log, and supervise inmate movement, recreation, visitations, cleaning, laundry, and security checks. Receive and release inmates by completing paperwork, fingerprinting, photographing, data entry, and conducting checks for outstanding warrants, protection orders, etc. Log and manage inmate property, money, and supplies. Exercise appropriate use of force and self-defense tactics to restrain disorderly inmates and deescalate volatile situations. Operate and maintain radios, telephones, and other communication equipment. Operate doors and intercoms and perform security checks of the perimeter, buildings, and grounds. Answer phones and assist callers with questions and concerns. Answer inmate questions and concerns and assist inmates with paperwork as necessary. Prepare and complete reports.
What You Need to Succeed in this Role
High school diploma or GED and one year of relevant work experience. Comparable combination of education and work experience may be considered. Must pass a written examination. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record with Minnehaha County. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Minimum Qualification GS-12
To qualify at the GS-12 level you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level performing the following law enforcement duties: 1) Investigation, apprehending, arresting, detecting, or prosecuting of persons violating applicable laws, rules, and regulations. 2) Providing training in law enforcement skills, techniques, and practices to prevent and/or detect illegal activities. 3) Planning, directing, implementing, evaluating, and coordinating functions of a Law Enforcement Program. 4) Serving as technical advisor to team leaders in the daily operations of their assigned functional areas.
FIREARMS REQUIREMENT:
This position requires that the incumbent meet initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996. An applicant whose background includes any of the following will be ineligible for consideration: 1) convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment exceeding one year; 2) has any outstanding warrants or is a fugitive from justice; 3) unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance; 4) adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to a mental institution; 5) illegally or unlawfully in the United States; 6) renounced U. S. citizenship; 7) subject to a court-ordered restraining order from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or child; or 8) convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Duties involve performing physically rigorous assignments, oftentimes in isolated outdoor environments, frequently while exposed to severe weather conditions. Working conditions may be dangerous and pose the potential risk of loss of life or serious injury to the Incumbent. Dangerous persons, many of whom are known to be combative and carry weapons, must be physically confronted, subdued, and apprehended, sometimes with no backup, far from assistance or help. Prisoners must be kept under physical restraint during transport and processing. Incumbent must be capable of engaging in maximum physical exertion without warning, pursuing perpetrators on foot, or responding to life threatening emergencies. Incumbent must possess sufficient aerobic capacity and muscular strength to subdue perpetrators or participate in sustained emergency or rescue efforts. Criminal investigations often must be conducted without regard to fixed work schedules, days off, or opportunities for proper rest or nutrition. Long hours conducting surveillance, investigations, apprehension, transport of prisoners, etc. are required of the incumbent. Carrying heavy objects and traversing long distances over difficult or hazardous terrain in extreme weather conditions are normal requirements for the position. Incumbent is required to participate in the mandatory Bureau's physical fitness program that equips the incumbent for performance in all physical aspects of the position. There is a high-stress component to much of the incumbent's work assignment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While some work may be performed in an office setting, most of the work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather and climatic conditions. The work is performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. Long periods of surveillance work may be required in cramped or unpleasant locations and under unpleasant conditions during investigations. The incumbent is frequently exposed to high-risk and potentially dangerous situations in law enforcement and emergency types of situations requiring use of a wide range of personal protective gear some of which may be uncomfortable, hot, or inconvenient to wear, adherence to specific safety procedures, and other precautions.
MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE LIMIT:
The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian law enforcement [or firefighter, if applicable] experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in the loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement. How You Will Make an Impact
Perform inmate head counts, cell checks, and searches. Monitor, log, and supervise inmate movement, recreation, visitations, cleaning, laundry, and security checks. Receive and release inmates by completing paperwork, fingerprinting, photographing, data entry, and conducting checks for outstanding warrants, protection orders, etc. Log and manage inmate property, money, and supplies. Exercise appropriate use of force and self-defense tactics to restrain disorderly inmates and deescalate volatile situations. * Patrol designated areas of the City of Williston in car, by foot, or other means to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, and enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; protect real and personal property by providing security checks of residential, business, and public premises; maintain awareness of and remains alert for wanted suspects, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress; issue warnings and citations.
* Respond to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including those involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents, domestic disturbances, property control, civil complaints, and related incidents; investigate complaints and takes appropriate action, which may include the use of deadly or non-deadly force; use sound judgment under adverse, stressful conditions.

* Participate in continuous training to enhance law enforcement skills including firearms proficiency, defensive driving skills, apprehension and arrest techniques, investigative skills, and general law enforcement skills.
* Perform a variety of administrative and other types of duties in support of law enforcement services, programs, and activities; attend meetings; maintain and calibrate specialized equipment including preliminary alcohol screening devices.
* Initiate and complete reports, legal documents, and other required paperwork; prepare a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed; prepare investigative reports and case information.

* When assigned to traffic, patrol assigned areas on a police motorcycle; perform a full range of traffic enforcement duties; observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist and advise motorist; use radar to detect speed; issue citations and warnings; investigate traffic accidents.
* Review information and evidence obtained for presentation in court cases; be able to give creditable testimony concerning evidence and facts gathered during the investigative process.
