David S. Loeb and Angelo Mozilo launched Countrywide in 1969.
The stock of Countrywide was relisted on the New York Stock Exchange in 1985 under the ticker symbol CFC.
Countrywide, part of Connells Group, was formed in 1986, when Bairstow Eves and Mann & Co. were acquired by Hambros Plc and merged to form Hambro Countrywide.
Countrywide Mortgage Investment was split out as a separate firm called IndyMac Bank in 1997.
The Countrywide Signs Franchise model was incorporated in Ireland in 2006 and due to the user friendly On-Line Board Management System, customers saw the immediate benefit of outsourcing their signboard requirements to Countrywide Signs Ireland.
As of April 1, 2007, the Bank obtained retail deposits, principally certificates of deposit, via the Internet, call centers, and more than 200 financial centers, many of which were housed in Countrywide Home Loans’ retail branch offices.

By 2014, it hit its peak at a market cap of around £1.4 Billion.
By August of 2018 it was unable to raise new debt with a failed bond offering.
Countrywide made the same decisions that most banks made with regard to technology. Its priority in 2018 as mentioned in the latest annual report continues to be to improve its legacy IT and contact center which hinder all scalable growth and in this case, the efficiency of scale.
